Ear Mites
Creepy Crawlies for the day... Ear Mites!
🔬🦠The ear mite (Otodectes cynotis) is a parasite that are found in the ear canal or skin surface of cats, dogs, rabbits, and ferrets. Most commonly, ear mites are seen in the ear canals of cats. Ear mites are barely visible to the naked eye, and is usually observed by looking at an ear wax sample under the microscope. A pet that has ear mites usually has dark debris resembling coffee grounds in the ears canals. These ear mites can cause painful ear infections, and the pets that they inhabit should receive medical treatment.
This video is a microscopic examination of discharge sampled from the ear of a cat revealing ear mites. One ear mite can be seen with ear wax on it's back, the other can be seen crawling around free of debris.
