There’s a new restaurant in Wilson, North Carolina, that hasn’t even had a chance to breathe before folks decided it needed to be torn down. Not brick by brick, but word by word—whispers over coffee, side-eyes in Facebook comments, the subtle but sharp judgment of “who do they think they are?” And the answer is simple: they’re people who dreamed big in a small town.

But here’s the thing about dreams—they cost something. Sometimes it’s money. Sometimes it’s courage. Sometimes it’s just the willingness to believe you deserve more than what’s always been. And that’s where the tearing down begins.

A steakhouse serving top-grade cuts with à la carte sides like you’d find in Charlotte or Raleigh isn’t a problem in itself. The problem, at least to some, is that not everyone can sit at the table. The median household income in Wilson is around $50,000 a year. That means for some, this isn’t just a special occasion spot—it’s a never-in-a-lifetime spot. And that hurts.

But instead of saying, “This isn’t for me,” some folks say, “This shouldn’t exist.” Because if they can’t have it, it feels like no one should. It’s easier to call something overpriced than to admit it’s just out of reach. It’s easier to say, “They won’t last six months,” than to wrestle with the frustration of feeling left out. It’s human nature, really.

But here’s what’s true: a town doesn’t grow by limiting itself to what’s always been. It grows by making space for all kinds of businesses—some affordable to everyone, some meant for once-a-year indulgences, and yes, some that might not be for us at all. And that’s okay. Every town needs a dollar menu, and every town deserves a white tablecloth, too.

So before we tear something down, maybe we ask: Am I really mad at the restaurant? Or am I mad at what it reminds me of?

Because in the end, there’s no shame in not being able to afford a steak. But there’s a little shame in hoping no one else gets one either.

We had the opportunity to dine there last night, and every dish delivered far beyond its price point.

The Corner in Wilson is a chef-driven spot. We sat at the countertop and watched the chef himself and the team during their very first service move like clockwork, delivering dishes one after another. For those who dine at finer establishments around the state, this spot feels like it fits somewhere between the now-shuttered Fine Folk in Raleigh and Native Fine Diner in Greenville, with creative dishes executed with a passion the shines through on every plate.

And if you’re within an hour of Wilson, this place is so worth the drive. Take it. Support them. We can almost guarantee it’ll be a restaurant you add into your rotation.
