With fireworks season just around the corner, now is the perfect time to prepare your puppy for loud sounds in a positive way! Socialization isn’t just about meeting people and dogs—it’s also about getting your puppy comfortable with the world around them, including noises like thunder, sirens, and yes…fireworks.

Here are some training tips to help your puppy feel safe and confident during firework season:

🎧 Start with Sound Desensitization

Play recordings of fireworks at a very low volume while your puppy is doing something they enjoy—eating meals, playing with a favorite toy, or engaging in training games. Gradually increase the volume over time only if your puppy stays relaxed. This helps them build a positive association with the sound.

🧸 Create a Safe Space

If you know fireworks will be happening (holidays, neighborhood events, etc.), plan ahead. Give your puppy a cozy, quiet place to retreat—ideally a crate or covered area in an interior room with white noise or soft music playing. Add a favorite toy or chew to keep them occupied.

🐾 Stay Calm and Positive

Dogs look to us for cues on how to feel. If you act anxious, they may think there’s something to worry about. Instead, stay upbeat, relaxed, and offer rewards for calm behavior.

✅ Avoid Taking Them to Firework Events

Even well-socialized adult dogs can become frightened by big, booming shows. For young puppies, it’s best to skip outdoor events where fireworks are expected. Instead, focus on gradual sound exposure in controlled settings at home.

💡 Bonus Tip: Pair Sounds with Treats

Every time your puppy hears a bang—even from a distance—toss a few treats or start a game. This builds a strong “Yay! That sound means good stuff!” connection.
