Non-sweaters, also called anhidrosis is a problem we address daily. If your horse is suffering in the heat give us a call. The AAEP gives good background information here.

Summer is a great time of the year to be a horse owner but let's not forget that heat, aggressive insects, and drought-hardened pastures can really impact the health and comfort of our equine friends.

One of the side effect of the heat for some horses is the inability to sweat properly. This condition, called anhidrosis, is potentially dangerous for horses because it compromises their ability to thermoregulate even in weather that doesn’t seem that hot, and therefore puts them at higher risk of heat stress.

Anhidrosis is not fully understood yet; it is widespread in the hot and humid regions of the southeastern United States and the Gulf states, but it is also widely reported elsewhere during the summer and particularly during heat waves. If your horse has a high respiratory rate and does not seem to tolerate turnout on hot days, be sure to discuss it with your veterinarian.

Remember that administering unnecessary medications without consulting your horse doctor first could do more harm than good, as it puts your equine friend at risk of developing harmful side effects!

...how often do you seek answers on Google or on social media?

In all seriousness, we're not saying that all Internet advice is bad. You can and should use the online resources available to your advantage—like to find good tips for basic training issues or to learn more about specific diseases. But this is your reminder that there are MANY reasons to start with your own veterinarian when you're seeking answers about your horse's health.

An Internet consultation might sound like the cheapest option at first but it cannot replace the physical exam performed by a trained and experienced veterinarian, and in the end treatment without a proper diagnoses could prove more costly and time consuming.

Your horse doctor invested a lot of time and resources in their training to be able to provide the highest standard of care to their patients—trust them to care for your horse as much as you do!

February is National Pet Dental Health Month. While horses don’t exactly qualify as pets, this is still a good opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of having a veterinarian check your horse’s teeth at least once a year

This older horse had two infected cheek teeth. Those affected teeth were removed and the sinus flushed to help clean it out today.

When was the last time you had your horse’s teeth checked?
