The cases of positive horses with Equine infectious anemia have been in the news headlines recently. I was able to sit in on a report given by the state veterinarian at the Texas Veterinary Medical Association meeting last week. The report was that the cases are so far predominately (almost exclusively but I can't say that with 100% confidence) coming from shared needles and also from blood products being shipped into the country illegally. Horses that are crossing the border illegally, horses in barns with positives, fluid administration sets and needles being reused and shared, and contaminated blood products are the primary source. Very few (if any- again i do not know if this is 100%) have been transmitted by insect vectors in this outbreak.
So be vigilant, fly control, make sure horses under your care are tested, but continue enjoying your equine activities. Our state veterinarians and investigators are doing a remarkable job. I hope this offers some peace of mind. Equine Partners Veterinary Services, PLLC

Non-sweaters, also called anhidrosis is a problem we address daily. If your horse is suffering in the heat give us a call. The AAEP gives good background information here.

Summer is a great time of the year to be a horse owner but let's not forget that heat, aggressive insects, and drought-hardened pastures can really impact the health and comfort of our equine friends.

One of the side effect of the heat for some horses is the inability to sweat properly. This condition, called anhidrosis, is potentially dangerous for horses because it compromises their ability to thermoregulate even in weather that doesn’t seem that hot, and therefore puts them at higher risk of heat stress.

Anhidrosis is not fully understood yet; it is widespread in the hot and humid regions of the southeastern United States and the Gulf states, but it is also widely reported elsewhere during the summer and particularly during heat waves. If your horse has a high respiratory rate and does not seem to tolerate turnout on hot days, be sure to discuss it with your veterinarian.

Remember that administering unnecessary medications without consulting your horse doctor first could do more harm than good, as it puts your equine friend at risk of developing harmful side effects!
