We had Manu back with us this week. We have built a bond over his past couple of visits to where he is starting to handle for me like he does his pops. Worked on his impulse control from a distance over a few days and on the last day he was nailing it. I threw everything I had at him distraction wise, except a gun shot, and he wouldn’t break on place. He held his mark and preformed a perfect retrieve. Jim has done an excellent job with him and is always a welcome member of our pack.

With the number of pups we have and the activities that we are involved in, I have been considering this.

Some more information to counter the argument that a “bird dog is a bird dog and shouldn’t be trained for anything other”. Please don’t misguide others because you have been misinformed yourself or because you don’t have any interest in advancing other opportunities for you and your pup. Don’t disregard a pup’s potential or someone else’s desire to advance their pup’s abilities. The worst that can come of it is that the pup gets to spend more time working with the handler and building that bond by over coming challenges together. Which is something that every team should strive for.

We all know these dogs can develop amazing skills and sometimes those amazing skills can crossover and provide truly valuable services to society. Perhaps exploring an option such as Search and Rescue is something that would be rewarding and enjoyable for you try with your bird dogs in the off season? Melissa Stagnaro joins me to explain that it doesn't have to be one or the other. Your bird dog can do both if you want them to!

This will stir the pot a little. My observations and opinions here but worth thinking about. Most of this pertains to first time owners but may be informative to people who have had bad experiences.

When it comes to puppies. It’s the breeder’s job to help the potential owners understand which pup fits into their lifestyle and what they are able to manage when it comes to developing a pup. The breeder spends a lot of time with the litter. They get to know each one, direct their development, and begin the foundational training. Through experience they will see what potential that each pup has and can estimate how the pup will develop pretty accurately. It’s the breeders responsibility to find the right homes for the pups not just get them sold.

Be wary of:

Any breeder who does not interview you as you would them. There is no way that they will understand what you’re looking for and help you find the right one if they don’t ask the right questions. Such as; what are you looking for in a dog, what do you plan to do with the dog, how active is your lifestyle, do you have kids, what ages are the kids, do you have other pets?

Any breeder who only tells you about confirmation. Confirmation is important but social skills are more important for the average dog owner. They should be more focused on personality, potential based on past litters and parents, behavior, biddability, and health.

Anyone selling a pup who tells you that any of their litter will fit your situation. There will always be one or two that fits your life better. If not, hopefully they’ll tell you so.

I have lost many potential clients because:

I was not willing to sale a pup based on looks alone.

I didn’t have a pup that fit into their lifestyle.

I didn’t believe they were capable of providing for the pup.

They were just looking for a pup to breed to.

The concept is that if you’ve done your homework and found the right breeder and are forthcoming with the breeder, that the correct pup for you will be selected so you and the pup will have a good experience.

My purpose of turning people down or directing them to ABR or another breeder is not personal because like I stated in the beginning “My primary responsibility is to the pup”. If the pup is not happy than neither will you be. It’s nothing personal.

Our Yellow Collar male “Chip” found his new pack with the Woeste family today. He is a very loving, calm, and biddable fella with so much character. He loves water and really enjoys the hunt. I believe he is in very good hands with the Woeste’s and will provide them with as much joy and happiness as they will him.
