🐾 My pet was diagnosed with cancer, now what?

As our pets become more integral family members, we take better care of them. A wonderful side effect of that is they are living longer. A negative side effect is that they are now living long enough to develop cancer. People being more attuned to their pets and primary care veterinarians having access to more sophisticated diagnostics allows cancer to be diagnosed earlier and accurately. This has led to more options for treatments with fewer side effects.

When a pet is diagnosed with cancer we normally start with staging. This helps determine whether the cancer has spread and, if so, where and if it is causing organ dysfunction. If this is performed at your primary care veterinarian, it will include chest X-rays, abdominal ultrasound, sampling of the mass and regional lymph nodes, and bloodwork. If performed at a specialty hospital, it may include a CT scan. This will allow us to give an accurate prognosis and offer treatment options.

Advanced Specialty Center of New England will be opening a new comprehensive oncology center in Spring of 2025 featuring the most advanced oncologic therapies, including cutting-edge radiation options delivered on a State-of-the-art Truebeam system.
