We should be celebrating, safely! Not from a hospital bed, the burn center, trying to figure out how to count to ten with missing fingers or toes, or watching your neighbors house burn because of complacency.
Enjoy, celebrate, have fun! Just be safe about it!
With Fourth of July celebrations ahead, please keep these fireworks safety tips in mind. Remember, fireworks CAN start wildfires!
• Obey your local fireworks ordinances
• Use fireworks in a safe area away from dry fields, forests and buildings
• Properly extinguish coals from grills and firepits before leaving the area
• Don’t park on dry vegetation
• Make sure that any safety chains on trailers and RVs don't drag on the pavement, which can cause sparks that can ignite dry vegetation
• If you plan to conduct a debris burn, notify the Forestry Commission before you burn. (https://www.scfc.gov/protection/fire-burning/how-to-notify/). Limit fires to vegetative material like leaves, limbs and branches. clear a firebreak around the burn site. Have the right personnel and equipment available (people/shovels/rakes/water) to keep the fire under control. Stay with the fire until it is completely out (drenched and/or cold to the touch).
