PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 23, 2022
Raccoon tests positive for Rabies in the Town of Tompkins
A raccoon in the Town of Tompkins has tested positive for rabies. The rabid raccoon attacked and exposed one dog; no human exposures were reported. The dog was up to date on its rabies vaccinations and received a booster.
Rabies is endemic to the area. An exposure to rabies can be fatal for a human or a pet. Vaccination of pets and other animals is the best preventive measure available. Be a responsible pet owner by keeping your pet’s vaccinations up to date.
Once infected, rabies is a virus that has a 100% fatality rate for mammals, including humans, when left untreated. Public Health recommends the following precautions to protect yourself and your family from possible exposure to rabies:
• Report any sick or strange acting wildlife
• Vaccinate pets and livestock. New York State law requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies by 4 months of age. Vaccinating your domestic animal not only provides protection for the animal, but vaccinated pets act as a barrier to keep the rabies virus from spreading between wild animals and people.
• Vaccination is also recommended for livestock with frequent human contact.
• Do not feed wildlife or stray animals and discourage them from seeking food near your home.
• Do not feed strays. According to Public Health Law an owner is defined as any person keeping, harboring, or having charge or control of or permitting any dog, cat or domesticated ferret to remain on or be lodged or fed within such person’s house yard or premises.
• Do not approach an unknown animal, either wild or domestic, especially if it is acting in a strange or unusual manner.
• Report all animal bites and any contact with bats to the Health Department in your county. Human rabies can be prevented after exposure by administering a series of shots.
• Keep garbage cans tightly covered and avoid storing any food outside.
• Children should be instructed to tell an adult immediately if they were bitten or scratched by any animal.
• If an unvaccinated pet comes in contact with rabid or suspected rabies the pet must be quarantined for six months.
• Vaccinated pets that come in contact with rabid or suspected rabies animal must be given a booster rabies vaccination within five days of the contact.

Claire Iliescu LVT
Claire has been working at the clinic since finishing an internship here in 2020. She is currently going to SUNY Delhi to finish her Bachelor's degree with hopes of going on to veterinary school.
When not at the clinic Claire can be found attending classes, working at the school library, taking her dog to Oquaga Creek State Park, or enjoying her favorite hobby of all, eating.
Claire has a Belgian Malinois named Ace and one cat named Onyx. Both of whom love to cause Claire all sorts of headaches as they run around getting into all sorts of trouble.
Alyssa Carey LVT
Alyssa has been working at the clinic since 2020. She is currently attending SUNY Delhi to get her Bachelor's degree and will be heading out to do an internship at the beginning of 2022 to help expand her skill base!
When not at the clinic Alyssa can be found walking her dog, spending time with her friends, doing school work, and keeping herself so busy that she doesn't have time for other hobbies.
Alyssa has one dog named Jack, who's a very good boy. She also has a cat who's name still hasn't come to her but hopefully soon she'll be struck by the perfect name. Alyssa also has a bearded dragon and a few birds!
Logan Osterhoudt LVT
Logan has been working at the clinic since completing an internship here in 2020. He currently spends most of his work life at the Heart of the Catskills Humane Society in Delhi but can be spotted a couple days a week here. Dr. Plance loves having another dude in the clinic. Logan has also been able to identify every type have bird that has come into the clinic since he has started working here. Logan’s background in ecology helps us better understand the species we are treating.
When not at the clinic Logan can be found hiking with his dog, spending time with the shelter dogs, and assisting Kylie with whatever crazy adventure she has decided to embark on.
Logan has one co-parented dog Alaska and one step dog Potato. Both of whom he loves to make act like goobers. He will not claim Mila as part of his pack as she scares him.
Kylie Piorkowski LVT
Kylie has been working at the clinic since 2017. She splits her time between working here and at the Heart of the Catskills Humane Society in Delhi. She also cares for overnight patients at the clinic! With Kylie’s experience in both clinical and shelter medicine, she brings a unique perspective the clinic and can soothe any anxiety aggressive dog that walks through the door.
When not at the clinic Kylie is usually at a waterfall with her dogs, at HCHS spending time with the shelter animals, or driving to Oneonta for Taco Bell.
Kylie has two dogs, Potato and Alaska, both of which came from the Heart of the Catskills Humane Society. She also has one very ornery cat named Mila who she got as a stray kitten from the clinic. Mila is also convinced she is a dog having been raised by Kylie's previous shepherd, London. Besides her usual rambunctious crew Kylie often has foster animals scurrying around causing a ruckus all there own! She has now surpassed 100+ fosters.
Lacey Speidell LVT
Lacey has been working at the clinic since 2016. Lacey took on the roll of office manager during 2020 and is eager to see where her career will lead! Lacey loves every aspect of veterinary medicine but has an extreme interest in surgery and jumps at any opportunity to assist Dr. Plance in a difficult operation.
When not at the clinic Lacey can be found taking her dogs for hikes and walks, crafting anything you can imagine..especially if it's pet related, or spiking a volleyball into someone's face no matter the time of year.
Lacey has two dogs Oliver and Cheddar. The goofiest boy Oliver is sure to wow all with his Ollie-Oop and other suite of tricks while Cheddar stuns with her cute puppy looks.
She also has one cat named Leroy who is a hapless gentle cat who wouldn't survive a fight with a butterfly.
As Vet Tech Appreciation week comes to an end, we wanted to have a chance to show off our incredible crew.
These are our Licensed Veterinary Technicians.
We are so grateful to have such a versatile and dedicated team of individuals that care for your pets every single day and they do not receive nearly as much credit as they deserve.
