This post is VERY delayed!
A huge congratulations goes out to Katie and RJ as well - they also completed their advanced rally title with a third place finish! So proud of you guys. Rj is just the best boy and he makes everyone in class giggle with his ahwoos. Katie even stepped into the beginner novice obedience ring last show!! However, then she got some terrible news.
Rj was diagnosed with elbow dispaysia and bilateral shoulder arthritis. This is a devastating diagnosis in a young dog with so much promise - but there’s hope! Luckily Katie insured RJ but even with insurance the cost of his treatment will be staggering - including one recommended treatment that insurance can’t tell her if it will be covered until after she submits the bill. That’s a huge expense for a maybe (please note that is specific to her insurance company and not an industry wide thing). If you are able to please donate to RJs lifetime health expenses via this go fund me:

We love you RJ and can’t wait to see you again ❤️

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to anyone who is able to help offset his expenses - every dollar counts!

Blog post 1: Why you need to stop shouting Adopt Don’t Shop!

Imagine being a farmer with 100 sheep to move into a different pasture. And the only dog you have to do it is a golden retriever.
Why is that a problem? Goldens were bred to retrieve, they are hunting dogs- not herding dogs. They have NO idea how to herd sheep. A rabbit hunter would be just as dumbfounded to only have a border collie for rabbit hunting - bc that dog is bred to herd. A french bulldog isn’t going to retrieve a bird for a hunter. A cavalier King Charles is not going to help a police officer apprehend a suspect just like a malinois isn’t going to happily lay on its owner’s lap all day.

For the same reason.
Dogs were selectively bred for years for different skills and to do different jobs.

And when you don’t research the breed and know what a good fit for your family is, well, your trainer can not simply turn your high drive selective German shepherd into a happy go lucky love everyone lab.
It is very important to pick a breed that’s a good match for your family - from personality to hair coat to inherit traits - because genetics run DEEP.

Adopt don’t shop is a phrase that stemmed from a shelter in LA in the 80s that the pita people really sunk their talons in and ran with. There is NOTHING wrong with wanting a well bred predictable dog with generations of known personality and health behind it. People and rescues that shame people for wanting a well bred dog are disgusting.
AND there is nothing wrong with wanting to adopt a dog! There are tons of dogs that need homes in this country. But there are just as many trash rescues as there are backyard breeders.
Backyard breeders are awful - there is no excuse for it.

The American consumer should be educated enough to look out for red flags. But somehow we are still here. Even today with amazing breeders sitting with amazing puppies. And yet backyard breeder dogs getting snatched up with no education on the part of the buyer then the dog being dumped at a shelter bc those breeders aren’t taking those dogs back. If you have a dog or get a dog from an ethical breeder that dog always has a home. Period. Any dog I breed always has a home with me. Fall in hard times? Return the dog. Can’t handle the dog? Return the dog. Get sick? Return the dog. That’s what you get with an ethical beeeder. And an ethical rescue! Is your dog cheaper from a backyard breeder? Maybe? But not always! Often you see BYBs using phrases like “AKC registered” “health tested” words that people are looking out for now- but they’re misleading. Y’all going to a vet and the vet saying yep dog is healthy is NOT health testing.
Every breed club has health testing they recommend for the dog before breeding. Most commonly are OFA (orthopedic foundation for animals) or PENN hip testing to ensure there’s no hip or elbow dysplasia, a simple cheek swap for a health testing for health issues as important as DM (degenerative myopathy). Checking eyes to ensure your puppy won’t inherit a disease that’s going to cause them to go blind as a young adult. Heart testing to ensure your dog is less likely to keel over from heart failure. Liver shunt testing is done in wolfhounds as puppies to ensure your puppy doesn’t have a life altering condition before you take the puppy home. Imagine falling in love with your best friend to lose that dog young to a condition that could have been preventing by not breeding two dogs that both carry for the same disease? Imagine your German shepherd slowly deteriorating in front of your eyes from DM or your collie going blind at 14 month old or your wolfhound puppy not thriving and finding out it has a liver shunt.
Y’all the list goes on. Those generations of dogs being bred for specific traits and personality and talent are also being bred carefully for health to make sure the risk of you getting a dog with a life altering condition is mitigated. S**t happens. No dog or human or line of genetics is perfect. You get outliers. But health testing is going to help as much as possible. Educated ethical breeders are always going to do their best to bring health happy well adjusted dogs into the arms of new owners.
And when those things don’t happen- thank GOD there are rescues. Breed clubs do rescues too! And these good rescues do SO much work for these dogs. Taking on medical cases and high risk behavior dogs and putting lots of money and time into training and getting these dogs healthy. Often paying for board and trains to then adopt the dog out for less than that training cost . But if not for the backyard breeder - the rescue wouldn’t have to!
The problem (mostly) starts and ends with the American consumer. Period. You can blame whoever you want. But the truth is it’s the consumer. It is on YOU. If no one buys the backyard breeder dogs they surrender to a rescue (hopefully…) and then that’s it. They’re done. They are doing this for money! No money- no breeding!
You just have to do the research or reach out to someone who already has. Even with a rescue! There are rescues BREEDING DOGS to have puppies to adopt. Yes, it is true. I’m not just spouting off here, I know this for a fact. You should do just as much homework on the rescue as they are doing in you! Want a purebred dog? Go to a dog show! Connect with someone holding the leash of the dog you want. Look into the parent club for that breed. Find out the breeders the parent club recommends - having a listing on AKC does not mean your dog is well bred or ethically bred.
This goes for doodles too! Are you visiting a farm with dogs stashed in kennels and tiny cages? Not seeing parents? Do the dogs look sickly? Is there health testing? YOU ARENT RESCUING THAT PUPPY. Stopppppp. You are lining the pockets of a backyard breeder. All puppies are cute. Don’t get into that oh I had to save him mindset. Bu****it. Do better.
There are doodle breeders health testing now too!
Ask the right questions, spend time talking with the breeder. Look for a breeder that is going to match you a dog. You thinking a puppy is cute after 5 minutes of interacting with it does not mean anything, it may not be the best fit for your family. See above, all puppies are cute. The breeders know these dogs. They’ve raised them and spent countless hours getting these puppies to this stage. Same with ethical rescues! They put lots of time into raising litters thanks to the neglect of other people and they know these puppies best.
My parents bred showed and raised dogs. I’ve had two litters. I’ve helped with many many many litters. There is a lot of knowledge in my brain when it comes to breeding and puppies. We are currently in a very strange period where covid flooded the market and now people can’t afford dogs. Shelters are full of unsocialized covid dogs. Why? Because they aren’t cheap! I spend almost $700 a month to insure 6 dogs. I feed raw with a high quality kibble to my couple dogs that won’t handle raw - that’s wildly expensive. Vet visits even for wellness are expensive. There are amazing breeders that simply aren’t breeding. Dogs that have a lot to offer the breed that aren’t going to be bred this year or next year and maybe are going to age out of breeding. Who knows what ramifications this will have in the future. But if people with titled tested dogs aren’t breeding you surely shouldn’t breed your Merle Aussie just bc you think it’s cute. That puts you right in that backyard breeder catagory. And it’s more dangerous than you even realize.
Everyone has to do their part. The consumer, the breeder, the rescue. I truly hope the world of purebred dogs continues past this bump in the road and that those great breeders don’t sit back for to long. That we don’t lose at risk breeds during this terrible economy. We need these different breeds. We need a dog world that isn’t just doodles (no offense to anyone, but it’s true). My husband can’t take a doodle hunting, my farmer friends can’t ask a frenchie to go move the stock, elderly or inactive homes do not want a working dog, a golden isn’t going to pull your sled across the Alaskan outback.
Please consider all of these things when you go around preaching adopt don’t shop. How about just educate? Learn the red flags and green flags. Ask the right questions. Don’t impulse buy a dog that’s going to be a part of your family for ten plus years or set yourself up to fail with a breed that is NOT ever going to be what you want or need it to be.
I would love to help you figure out what breed would work best for you and help connect you with a breeder or a rescue to find your next best friend. Just ask! I’d love to be part of the solution!!!

I need three people to help with canine good citizen testing 9/17 at 6pm please!

It should only take an hour and your job will be super simple - like walking around and maybe petting a dog.
