Here you can see how Chelsie is handling her triggers towards the end of the session as we were making our way back to the car. I was very happy to see this interaction because that was probably the closest we were to people. She was showing an interest in them and definitely was on the defense but was letting her guard down a little bit. I look forward to more sessions with her but she has made great progress.

Here you can see me encourage her to go after it so she can outlet that instinctual prey drive that she has. This drive for her is so strong that she will ignore everything else in the environment.

Here you see that Chelsie ignores the first group of people but becomes stimulated by the next person that walks by. I decided to see what she would do and if she would escalate the behavior and then followed it up with a recall so that I could shift that energy in my direction. It's important for me to note that prior to this training session Chelsie was punished for an incident of reactivity using a prong collar and leash.

In order to work on Chelsie's reactivity I took her to a local park on Long Island. This not only allows us to create more space from her triggers, but also allows me to give her more space and freedom away from me using a long line. Here you can see Chelsie making a decision to activate me to engage with her using her obedience. We have practiced various exercises to help create this and with her I find it very effective to use some treat throwing to engage that terrier brain to try to find the treat. This has all been practiced extensively prior to this training session in the park and is used throughout this session.

Chelsie is extremely reactive terrier mix living in the suburbs of Long Island. Terriers were originally bred to hunt and for pest control.These needs can be very hard to meet in a suburban environment and can quickly lead to frustration for both dog and owner. Combine all of that with a dog that is nervous and you get Chelsie. Chelsie is reactive to people, dogs, prey, and has even taken out a couple of TVs. I am going to be posting a lot of videos from this park session in parts so you can see what we did and hopefully give people an insight into my thought process.
