Handsome Tucker is a 4 year old pup waiting almost 2 years for a foster or forever home. He knows several commands and walks great on leash. This adorable mountain goat is Dahlia. 😍

Well... she's actually a petite little terrier mix, but she sure does love climbing nonetheless. 🙂

This sweet girl was dumped from a car over a year ago, and is sadly growing up in a shelter. 😢 So moments like these are few and far behind for the sweet Dahlia.

It takes her a little time to trust new people, so most don't get to see the real Dahlia. Sweet, playful, affectionate, and full of life!

Most simply see a dog curled up and depressed in her kennel. She is the epitome of a dog that does not show well.

The gorgeous Dahlia made another friend today. Here she is on her very first walk with volunteer Crissy! 😃

Look at the affection and appreciation in those eyes! It warms our hearts. 😍

Sadly, most families won't get a chance to see this side of Dahlia as she can be nervous and aloof with strangers.

If you come visit Dahlia, chances are you won't get to see this side of her. She's not a fan of kennel life (we don't blame her!), and she takes a little time to trust new people.

That's why this brindle beauty has spent the majority of her youth in a shelter.

Today is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day! If you or someone you know is looking to add a furry family member to your home please visit a local shelter or a rescue (who will then have more space to pull another pet from a shelter) where there are so many deserving former family pets in need of good homes.

These 4 pups (along with many others) are now residing at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter.

Tillito was left at the shelter by his family because he had a lump on his side. His shelter took care of it, and it turned out to be no more than a harmless cyst which was removed and he has been fine ever since.

Yet over a year later and this handsome 7 year old is still waiting to become a member of someone's family. He is friendly with people and dogs (but like all dogs needs proper intros) and his leash walking skills make him a wonderful walking companion.
