A slightly different
Where will she be adopted to?!
Lapa means paw in Ukrainian and she was picked up in Lyman in September working with Tiernothilfe Ukraine e.V. and Доступна Стерилізація. Currently she is in New York waiting for her forever home!
She is one of the rare Ginger females of the world. And she has the most perfect Barbie pink nose! On top of all of that she is super sweet and a purr-machine!!
So if you're looking to adopt please get in touch. We can arrange for transport pretty much anywhere in the continental US!

Help us help them.

What a chaotic weekend we had!
2 of our board members flew to Europe to move four animals to the United States but (because of the butterfly effect 🤣) we were unable to fly back with half. Only two cats came across. The 2 dogs are still in Germany. (The type of airplane changed to one that does not have a temperature/pressure controlled cargo hold)
So one board member will be flying back again next week to secure the two dogs!!
Lapa (Paw in Ukrainian) and Zirka (Star in Ukrainian) have cleared customs and are in a short quarantine at the house to make sure they didn't pick up anything on the journey over.
Lapa (orange/red Female) is still looking for a home if anyone is interested!
Zirka will head to her new home on Thursday!

Help us help them.

We have a long history and on-going joke that the van is constantly broken.
But it makes sense!
Every trip we add at least 2500 miles/4000 kilometers and each trip we move several TONS of food and veterinary supplies.
So, of course, the van that currently works the best is the one that got blown up.
Tierklinik im Tierzentrum Gelnhausen donated the Movano to Доступна Стерилізація in 2023 and within a few months it was near a building stuck by a rocket while evacuating a town at the frontlines.

TNR (trap-neuter-return) programs use a lot of different ways to identify that a dog or cat has already been sterilized. This helps us hopefully prevent having to give them another dose of unnecessary anesthesia.
Dogs of Chernobyl uses the most highly visible technique, which is a pet-safe hair paint on the foreheads of dogs. It's one of my favorite techniques because out only lasts a few days and we get creative with the paint!
Both dogs and cats receive a tattoo in their ear and/or on their belly near their belly button (umbilicus). We like this option for potentially adaptable dogs and cats from the frontlines because it is the least obvious.
Cats often receive an ear tip but anther option is an ear notch, which is what we use at Tiernothilfe Ukraine e.V. This has a faster healing time and is less obvious (great for adaptable pets)
We also use ear tags for steet dogs because it is visible and long lasting. It is similar to an earring and done while they are under anesthesia.
So if you see any pets with these markings it means they were lucky enough to receive veterinary care before finding a home!
Help us help them.

Markus and Laurel did not get to hang out for the post-campaign group photos because they were called out to rescue dogs in Kyiv... but thus is the life of a rescuer!
The Dogs of Chernobyl team completed 98 surgeries in 4 days!

The aim of ever sterilization program is to prevent overpopulation and we're trying our best!
We can only spay dogs once they are a certain size and able to handle anesthesia and the recovery. So if a mom comes in with puppies, we simply need to stop EVERYTHING we're doing and take care of the puppies while mom is in surgery. 😍
These puppies received warmth, food, and love while their mom was sterilized and once she had recovered from surgery they were all replaced to where they were found.
Hopefully they will survive the winter and they can be sterilized next year.

highlight is Бася!
Since 3 members of our board are volunteering with Clean Futures Fund and Dogs of Chernobyl, so we figured we would highlight THE DOG THAT STARTED IT ALL!
In 2019, we were volunteering for Dogs of Chernobyl in a town called Slavutych/Славутич. This is the town where all the workers live from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP). Laurel saw this puppy across the surgical suite in the surgical prep area, and she knew INSTANTLY this dog was headed to the USA. She has been living in NY since June 2019 and since then has helped with all the fosters that have come across since then! A true snuggler, Бася now goes by the call sign Boss, and spends her time playing with other dogs, caring for cats, and sleeping on the sofa. A very tough life, indeed!

Help us help them.

The Men of the Dogs of Chernobyl!
I swear they exist.
Apparently it's impossible to take a selfie AND catch wild dogs and cats. But we make do...
Andrew Simon is the man with the plan and the van! I don't think anyone has the words to describe how critical he is to the program. Not only does he help every campaign, he also delivers food weekly to the dogs in Chernobyl.
Darrin Wittbrot is TU-USA's treasurer and a volunteer for Clean Futures Fund since 2018.
Markus Hegen is our VEEP and president of our parent organization.
Marcus Fillinger is from Australia and used to working with kangaroos but he lent a hand on his second trip to Chernobyl to catch cats and dogs.
