It’s time for a holiday weekend! Easter is upon us, and to help make sure you spend the weekend out having fun hiding eggs instead of waiting at the veterinarian’s office, make sure you’re aware of how to keep your pets safe! According to ASPCA Poison Control, these are the top hazards that they get calls about on Easter:

-CHOCOLATE: Chocolate contains a compound called theobromine which is toxic to our pets – it causes an increased heartrate, vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, and at high doses can even cause seizures. The darker or more bitter the chocolate, the more toxic it is – just a few ounces of baking chocolate can send a giant dog to the ER!

-LILIES: Every part of the lily – including pollen, leaves, and the water inside a vase – is toxic, and cats are especially sensitive. Lily toxicity can cause rapid, fatal kidney damage, with signs including vomiting, lethargy, drooling, and lack of appetite. Any of the “true lilies” (including Easter lilies) or daylilies are the most toxic and should be kept far away from pets.

-XYLITOL: Xylitol (sometimes known as “birch sugar”) is an artificial sweetener. Most often found in sugar-free gum, it’s also used in some candies and gummies. Xylitol is highly toxic and even a small amount can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, or fatal liver damage.

-EASTER GRASS: While Easter Grass isn’t toxic, many pets find it irresistible to chew on – and when swallowed, those long strings of plastic can cause blockages in the GI tract, which can be fatal.

-TABLE FOOD: Be careful with table scraps! Foods that are very rich or high in fat and salt can cause stomach upset (vomiting and diarrhea) in our pets, and in some cases can even trigger dangerous pancreatitis. If you’re preparing a ham, make sure to keep the bones away from your dog, as they can cause blockages or splinters when chewed.

-HERBICIDES: As garden season starts, many of us start working on planting our favorite flowers. Keep fertilizers and chemicals out of reach of your pets!
