The Senior Scenter

The Senior Scenter We are a Cage Free Senior Dog Sanctuary and Hospice. Puppies Under Protection, Inc. is proud to present "The Senior Scenter". None of our residents live in cages.

Our "Old Timers Crib" was built to accommodate Senior Dogs that have been dumped at shelters or become "homeless" due to their owner passing or entering a nursing home, etc. As much as we would like, we do have a limit on how many seniors we can house and unfortunately can not take them all. Everyone has 24/7 free range of the home and the yard. Many have medical problems and may only be given we

eks or months to live. Our plan is to make sure that they are loved and comfortable up until and especially at their last moment on earth. Most of our seniors are here till they "Cross The Bridge" so there are no adoption fees like a regular rescue. We provide them with EVERY comfort a dog could need or want. The best food, comfy beds, a/c, heat, music, TV and LOTS of love . . 24/7!! If you like what we do, there are several ways you can help! We depend greatly on volunteers and donations so please message us with any questions.

Update on our guy Moses from Marcie! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿฅฐ

This is Marcie, one of the [very lucky] members of the Care Team. When you work with several animals itโ€™s only natural to develop bonds, some deeper than others. The love & care are the same across the board, but the level of bonding varies, naturally. Katie, for example, is our Queen Bee & she only has eyes for Kali, which has led to a strong bond between them. (Meanwhile, no one else is allowed to bother Katie, she only wants Kali.)

I have had a very special bond with Moses for quite some time. He is grumpy. He can be a jerk. He seems to take issue with some of the others & started becoming a bit of a handful in terms of his need to โ€œalpha upโ€ the smaller weaker pups at The Senior Scenter. He quickly gained a reputation for being a bit of a bully & rightfully so, his behavior wasnโ€™t ideal. He wasnโ€™t left unattended with the others; he would get his own secluded sleeping spot at night with his own bed, heating pad, & of course a bowl of water We found ways to work with his bad attitude, but something in me just KNEW that he was a good boy & wasnโ€™t as โ€œmeanโ€ as he liked the other dogs to think he was. I really tried to build his confidence in hopes he wouldnโ€™t feel the need to push the others around & in that time we simply fell in love. He started having less attitude with the other dogs because he was just glued to me, following me around all day, howling when Iโ€™d leave. It became apparent that Moses was his best self when he was with me & once that hit me,

I knew what needed to be done. He needed to come home with me. However, Moses has a medical issue in which he will very likely need surgical treatment for. At the base of his tail, he has what was initially believed to be a lipoma lump. Unfortunately, it became cancerous. He had surgery to remove the mass & recovered very well. He will very likely need this surgery again down the line. I am a firm believer in not biting off more than you can chew when it comes to animal adoption & I was concerned I couldnโ€™t provide Moses with what he needed financially. That is a humble feeling, but also one I couldnโ€™t ignore. So the Care Team discussed &โ€ฆ MOSES is now being long-term fostered BY HIS HUMAN! Now he just gets to live with her! Jeanne & The Senior Scenter were more than happy to provide Moses with whatever medical care he may need, especially if that meant he could go to his forever foster home & be truly happy.

I sob as I type this because I am overwhelmed with the love, I have for him & the joy I have over what a turnaround he has made! I have several cats & was very concerned that he wouldnโ€™t be very nice to them. Boy was I wrong! Heโ€™s a cat guy, for sure! He went from growling all day to not a peep. He went from bullying to cuddling. He went from grumpy to galloping & tail wagging & spurts of energy where he just runs & runs

Some dogs thrive at The Senior Scenter. Most do. A few struggle to adjust but they almost always find their groove & settle in. But from time to time, we have one that simply doesnโ€™t thrive in that environment. When that happens, we work hard to find the perfect placement for them. We arenโ€™t a rescue/shelter, we are a sanctuary. When we get new dogs in, we intend to love them til their last breath. On the occasion that The Senior Scenter isnโ€™t a good fit, we still make sure theyโ€™re loved to their last breath, just in another environment. Moses didnโ€™t thrive. He is a โ€œone-person kinda guyโ€ & is absolutely thriving at his new foster forever home He gets along with my 4 dogs, no growling or pushing anyone around But the cats! The cats are what shocks me! He absolutely loves to cuddle kitties! I assure you; no one saw that coming! He is very partial to Victra, a cat I raised from a few days old. They are the best of buddies & sleep together every single night! He absolutely loves to run; he gallops across the property like heโ€™s a puppy! He is so happy, so loved, & so deserving. I donโ€™t know who is luckier- me or him

Friday was yet another tough day for us here at the SS. Our sweet little Sylvie crossed the Rainbow Bridge. As we posted on Thursday, Sylvie was one of the kids that we took to see Dr. Marshall because she was not eating, and she was very listless. It was discovered that she was anemic and in renal failure. Dr. Marshall gave her an injection to help with her red cell count and we brought her home with the hope that we could get her to turn the corner with supportive care of subq fluids and lots of TLC. Sadly, this precious little soul just didnโ€™t have any fight left in her. She let us know she was exhausted and ready to join our other SS babies that have crossed the bridge before her.

Sylvie was the sweetest little lady! She was an unclaimed stray from a shelter and made her way to the SS from For the Love of Poodles (FLOP) rescue. She was a quiet, calm, loving little kid. Sylvie, we miss you and love you but take comfort in know youโ€™re eating all the very best treats and playing with the other SS pups across the bridge! RIP sweetheart. ๐Ÿ’”๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿพ

Meet Algernon aka Al as we like to call him. We were contacted about this cutie and Marcie drove to DeKalb County Animal Shelter to pick him up. We donโ€™t really have much information on his backstory, but it is our understanding that his foster situation fell through, so he made his way to us. Al has come out of his shell quite a bit since his arrival. He loves to hang out by the fence and give the Prys and horses a big what for! Heโ€™s got a great appetite and is a very sweet little boy. Welcome to the SS fam Al, we love you already! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’•

Weโ€™d appreciate healing vibes and prayers for the four SS pups that visited Dr. Marshall on Monday. Rascal, Speedy, Fancy and Sylvie went to see Dr. Marshall to be check out for various issues. Rascal seemed to have injured his back hindquarter, and his appetite has been off. Dr. M thinks he may have pulled a muscle. His blood panel also showed that he has chronic pancreatitis, so heโ€™s been put on a gastro food diet.

Speedy, Fancy, Sylvie also have not been eating their meals. Dr. M did a blood panel on each. Our Speedyโ€™s panel did not show anything unusual for a very old dog. He has no signs of infection, and his liver and kidneys are still working. He has been put on Gabapentin for his spondylitis.

Fancyโ€™s blood work showed that her kidneys and liver look okay but she also has pancreatitis. She has been put on a gastro diet.
Sylvieโ€™s blood panel showed that she is close to being in renal/kidney failure as well as anemic. Sheโ€™s being offered renal food but as of, yet her appetite has not improved. Sheโ€™s also getting a supplement to address the anemia and subq fluids as needed.

Rascal, Speedy and Fancyโ€™s appetites have improved somewhat. We will continue to provide all the supportive care possible and be keeping a close eye on these precious babies. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ™

Monday was a tough day here at Guardian Angel Acres. We had five of our kids at the vets for various issues. During the visit, Dr. Marshall discovered that Maverick was in congestive heart failure. The poor dear pup was exhausted, and we knew he was ready to join the other SS pups across the rainbow bridge. This little Boston Terrier mix was such a happy little pup who loved all he met and made them love him instantly. This charming little man came from Northeast GA Animal Shelter. We were contacted about this sweet boy after he came in as a stray. He was estimated to be between 8 to 10 years old, was extremely thin when he arrived and had issues with his spine.

Mav spent a few weeks at the SS when he first arrived but then it became clear that he had some gastro issues going on and moved in with Jeanneโ€™s pack in the main house to get some much-needed intensive TLC. He gained weight and got healthier. Mav fit into Jeanneโ€™s pack like he was always there and that is where he stayed. He got into the cutest little nightly routine with Jeanne and Karl. When he decided it was his bedtime, heโ€™d pronounce that fact with little huffs demanding to be tucked in his bed with a cookie! Maverick, you were a joy, and we will miss you every day. Rest in peace sweet man, we love you! ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒˆ.
