Well Hello friends!!!

I'm starting to see first litters of the season in the rabbit groups, but our does at SOTS are very 'empowered' (or maybe stubborn)! They have not been willing to breed, I think because of the lingering heat, until the last couple of days. Hopefully we will have our first litters of the fall in a month.

If you are interested in getting a quality NZ White rabbit or breeding pair/trio, check with us around October 20 when the first litter is expected.

Going a little "Cadbury" here for today - because the rabbitry has some fresh EGGS! These aren't fertilized, but if you or someone you know wants some free-range eggs (chicken or duck eggs) we know a lady... in Houston County, GA. PM for info.

My friends, it's been a minute since SOTS has shared anything clever or adorable on Facebook. This summer heat and dryness has been INSANE! We had some sad losses of litters that came just a little too late and for whatever reason didn't survive (I think the mama's didn't want to feed then because it was too hot). So now we are just biding time until the cooler air makes its way back to the rabbitry and will be back on your minds again before too long! Hope yall are all having a great summer!

The heat has arrived! It's going to get hotter, but rabbits in the South are already feeling it. If you've thought about frozen 2 liter bottles and just haven't decided to try it yet, or if you've never heard of this improvised A/C for bunnies...they LOVE it! Every last one of the SOTS bunnies are nestled up next to a 2 liter bottle full of ice, and looking much more comfy than 30 seconds before I put them in. Check out the "cooling pad" (Ian - 1st pic - seems to love it the most)

Tattoo/Weight day ✔️

Our youngest litter got marked and weighed today and let me tell y'all these are growing fast! 6 weeks and all are over 2.5 lbs, a couple closer to 3 lbs.

Pics are two from today's weigh/mark litter; there are 5 total (3 does, 2 bucks).

We should get 2 more litters this month, and then probably will give the breeders a break for the summer heat.

Yall, it's been a busy day here at the rabbitry. We weighed and tattooed Broadway's first litter and then separated Nicole's litter from mama for weaning.

My good friends on here are reserving these bunnies FAST so most of them have a place to go besides my grill or freezer 😁

Anyway, here are some pics of the litter (S3B - Broadway's) and the weighing and tattoo process. You will see that yours truly takes this part VERY seriously (my face gives away the concentration). And also, at one point the whole litter was on the weigh & mark table and one little bun gave its brother or sister a little kiss on the cheek to ease the anxiety.

They don't like being out in the open, so I try to do it quickly and get them back to their hide holes, but it's great to see that brotherly love!

Proud to say that a SOTS son knows how to distinguish bucks & does! The boy decided to spend a little time with this sweet....DOE today. He picked her out of the cage and figured out she was a she, and proudly told me "this one is a doe!"

I know a lot of yall who have taken home SOTS bunnies are teaching those youngins how to do all the 'bun' stuff too! Raisin em rabbit!

There is ONE THING you MUST be careful of if you want to raise rabbits. Watch out for "Were-rabbits" 😂. They apparently transform only during 70+ percent exposure to a total solar eclipse (like the 80% we had in GA today). They not only grow in size and take on a different color, their bone structure COMPLETELY transforms, too 🤣.

So before you take on any rabbit, be sure it's not a were-rabbit. Here's a couple pics of what happened at SOTS today because we didn't know to check... 🐇🐓🐇

Happy Easter-plus-one-day to all of our friends, from the rabbits and the ranchers here at Song of the South! Yesterday we picked one lucky bunny to come out and frolick on the ground for a while, exploring the unknown. This guy and his brother are ready and willing to come work for you!

Good morning from Nicole, with her second litter of the year!

Nicole went straight to work nest-building 🪹 yesterday when she got her nestbox, and this morning she kindled 9️⃣ little bunny-nuggets. Sadly 2️⃣ of the litter didn't make it - it looked.like they were away from the others and might have been trampled. But there 7️⃣🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰 wriggling kits in that big ball of fur!

Here at SOTS, we not only give each bunny an ID tattooed on the👂, but each litter gets an ID as well...it helps to quickly tell who is related and how closely. If you've seen one of our bunnies from the last few litters, the litter ID is the first 3 characters in our 5 digit tattoo:

'S' for SOTS
# for year (this year is '4')
Letter for which litter...A,B,C,D,E...

The litter in this picture is our 3rd of 2024 so these kits will be the S4C litter.

Broadway, the proud mama, with her first litter!

This doe. She was kind of stubborn. We tried breeding her at 8️⃣ months old and she refused to let the buck (Elliott) anywhere near her. Then again at 9️⃣ months old, and 🔟 months. She did NOT want him touching her 🙅‍♀️. We tried several things to help her mood, like ACV in her water, switching their cages for a day to let her get used to his scent 👃, and nothing worked. She was just timid and didn't want it 🐰.

So we waited. We bred Nicole, who is in the cage right next to her, and Nicole kindled, nursed, weaned, and didn't turn into a 🐸
🤣🤣🤣

A few weeks later 🗓 we bred Broadway. Got 3️⃣ fall-offs and she was done. This picture is her with her litter of 5️⃣, kindled on my hometown zipcode day - 3/13/24!

Here's hoping that now that Miss Broadway got the satisfaction of producing kits, she will be more eager to give it another go next month 🤞

And those of you who are waiting for info on rabbits from this litter, if I haven't already been in touch please PM or at least keep an eye out for more info in a few weeks.

Howdy friends! This is a repeat pic from a couple weeks ago, but I'll be sharing some more current pictures of the litter this week. These 7 kits are the product of Nicole x Backyard Lullaby's Ian (born Jan 06, 2024).

We have 5 of these bunnies available for you if you need a buck or doe. They will be 7 weeks old this weekend and are already weaned, curious, and independent enough to leave the "nest".

Here at Song of the South Rabbitry we are getting into FALL!
Ian and Nicole had a date (although, not sure if they actually "worked" 💥 or just "hung out by the water cooler" - we will find out in 30 days 😄).
Then the human notes 🎵 of this southern song gutted some pumpkins and made Jack o' lanterns 🎃. Turned out pretty good for the teens' first time carving by themselves!
Oh and the one 'Jack' was so surprised, Mrs SOTSY shared his shock!

Happy October 🍂 everyone! Hope all your rabbit 🐇 dreams are coming true, and the rest of life is well, too! -Mike

I know, I know, this is a rabbitry page and this has nothing to do with rabbits...but I just want to let all y'all we're still here...Song of the South did not get eclipsed 😂

5 week kit finding water!

Quick minute with Flora and her 7 (5 weeks old and we can tell sexes on a few...at least 1 buck and 2 does!). Just settling in for a Sunday night at SOTS!

Flora relaxing after kindling, kits in the box, and that would be Everlee lying in the mess below, guarding the scene and enjoying the shade.

Elliott (FI2N01) just relaxing on the back porch, waiting for the heat of the day to fade into a blissfully cool night!

I spent a good bit of time figuring out how to tattoo rabbits. Tried a tattoo pen, but my hand just isn't steady enough. The clamp works best for me. But what if you want the ear id# to signify something about the rabbit (sex, how it stacks up to growth of the rest of the litter, etc)? 🤷‍♂️ Check out my short video for an inside look at how I tattoo an ID number (just started 100% tattooing with last year's last litter, and it took a few runs to figure out the ID system I like best) for each #SOTSBunny that will quickly indicate sex, approximate age, and whether it was one of the faster or slower growth kits in its litter 👊.

A little shifting around in the hutch today. These 3 are 9 weeks old, 1 buck & 2 does. Just enjoying a little extra hay that didn't fit in the rack, waiting for the world to turn green in honor of St. Patrick's Day!

Chickens aren't too sure about this new little critter exploring their patio...kind of the same Brer Rabbit expression from the cover photo 😂😂

Really never expected to see this without a security camera, but Flora was feeding her litter at the same time I walked out to feed her and the other grown bunnies!
