With Easter around the corner, it’s important to remind friends and family of the dangers lilies pose to our feline family members. While beautiful, all parts of the flower are toxic. Ingestion is taken very seriously, as plant toxins can result in kidney failure.
If you think your cat may have been exposed, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

🐀Rat Poison🐀
We know seeing a rodent in the house or yard can be scary, gross or just downright cringe worthy, but before you place any poison traps, STOP! In trying to get rid of a pest, you could potentially put your pet at risk.
Most common types of poisons in bait traps and how they affect our pets if ingested are below:
🐀Cholecalciferol(Vitamin D3): causes a very high calcium and phosphorus level in the body, resulting in severe, acute kidney failure.
🐀Long-acting anticoagulants (LAACs): prevents the blood from clotting, resulting in internal bleeding. Long-acting anticoagulants work similarly to “blood thinners” that people take. When dogs or cats ingest LAACs, it typically takes 3-5 days before signs of poisoning are visible.
🐀Bromethalin: works by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation (a process where energy is harnessed through a series of protein complexes embedded in the inner-membrane of mitochondria) in the brain and liver mitochondria and can result in brain swelling "cerebral edema".
🐀Zinc and aluminum phosphides: once in the stomach, this poison releases phosphine gas. Food in the stomach will increase the amount of gas produced and increase the toxicity of the poison. Therefore, feeding your pet after ingestion of this poison is never recommended.

⚠️ Onset of symptoms may not be visible until 2-3 days after ingestion. As you can see, these 4 common baits can be very life threatening for our pets and our human children as well. Unfortunately, every year thousands of pets are affected.

Our recommendation is to use trapping methods versus having poisons around your home. With pets if there is a will, they will find a way.

🪴SAGO PALMS🪴
Warm weather is coming, and landscaping is likely on your mind. Please be aware that cutting some plants releases aromas that are attractive to pets. One plant that MGVEC wants to bring to your attention the most is Sago Palm. They are extremely toxic to pets and children. Even if the pet is brought in immediately and aggressive treatment is started, the survival rate is about 50%.
Sadly, MGVEC has already seen over 12 cases of Sago Palm toxicity since the beginning of 2024.

Happy First Day of Spring! ☀️🌸💐

Spring is a time of long walks in the park and hours spent playing in the yard. More time spent outside means more risk of the following…

Heartworm - Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes and is widespread throughout the US. Worms can cause damage to the arteries and lungs and can be expensive and difficult to cure.

Fleas - There are many species of fleas, and they can be very irritating to your pet as they make their home in your pet’s fluffy coat. Pets can also contract tapeworms through the ingestion of fleas.

Ticks - They can cause Lyme Disease, which is a serious condition, causing lameness, fever, and depression in dogs. Untreated, Lyme Disease can lead to kidney problems.

Snakes - There are many different types of venomous snakes in the United States, and they are responsible for the roughly 8,000 snake bites recorded in the US annually, according to PetMD.

📣 Xylitol Toxicity 📣

AKA birch sugar; is used in sugar free products.
Xylitol is extremely dangerous due to it causing a sudden release of insulin. That insulin then causes the animals blood sugar to drop, resulting in hypoglycemia. Xylitol can also cause liver damage. If your pet ingests a product containing xylitol seek veterinary care immediately.
Most companies are switching to xylitol for it's health benefits in humans and because it is cheap to manufacture. Always check the label before giving anything to your pet.
⚠️Products containing xylitol!⚠️
-Gum
-Peanut Butter
-Children's Benadryl
-Nasal Sprays
-Toothpaste
-Ice Creams
-Jell-O
-Candy
-Medications and Supplements

Dogs, rabbits, goats, cows are most effected by xylitol according to ASPCA Poison Control.
Luckily people, cats and ferrets are not negatively affected by xylitol.

🐱🐶🐾 Topical Treatment Toxicity 🐾🐶🐱

NEVER apply a dog topical treatment to a cat!!
Some topical treatments may contain Permethrin / Pyrethrin / Pyrethroid which are toxic to cats.
Permethrin poisoning may cause the following:
• Ataxia (impaired coordination)
• Tremors
• Seizures
• Tachycardia (rapid heart rate)
• Excessive Salivation
• Dilated pupils
Effects can start between 1 - 12 hours after application.
Permethrin poisoning can be fatal.
When using topical treatments, always read labels and directions carefully to ensure the product is appropriate for your pet’s species, age, and weight.
It is also recommended to separate pets in a 'multi-pet' household until the product is dry so pets cannot lick topical products off each other.
If you suspect your pet may have ingested a topical product, or you may have incorrectly administered a topical treatment, please call us immediately for veterinary assistance.

Our Plan

Middle Georgia Veterinary Emergency Center has been formed in 2017 by a partnership between South Atlanta Veterinary Emergency and Specialty and nearly 30 Veterinarians in the Middle Georgia region. This facility will be open to answer the great need in our area for compassionate, state of the art emergency medicine for our animal friends, and we will continue to uphold that high standard its owners have set.

Offering digital radiography, ultrasound, full range laboratory, and a modern surgical suite allows us to care for your pet at a time of great need. Our many diagnostic and treatment options give each owner the opportunity to make fully informed decisions concerning the care of their beloved pets and family member.

We are a shareholder owned facility, with 28 veterinarians and their private hospitals counting on us to care for their patients and their families. Our goal is to act as an extension-arm of your regular veterinarian. Even if your regular veterinarian is not an owner, we plan to treat your pet with the great care you are used to getting. Our plan is to develop an unbreakable bond with all veterinarians in the middle Georgia area. We hope that you will give us the opportunity to develop a trust relationship in the same way you have with your regular veterinarian.
