According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), early signs of diabetes are important to note and may include:

Excessive water drinking/increased urination

Weight loss (even without a decreased appetite)

Decreased appetite

Cloudy eyes (most common in dogs)

Chronic infections, such as skin or urinary infections

The Canadian Animal Health Institute also notes that “walking or standing in a plantigrade posture (‘down in the hocks’)” is another clinical sign seen in diabetic cats.

We encourage pet parents who have observed these signs in their pets to contact their veterinarian right away. If we notice any of these signs while pet sitting, we will notify clients as well.

Pet Sitters International has put together a small but helpful Amazon wishlist of the most essentially needed items. PSI is located 2 hours away from the devastation in Western North Carolina, and wants to help these families with pets in need.
