Post from 2019 by a very wise but tired dog sport organizer:
For all my dog sport friends....if you do dog sports, please consider joining a local club and become ACTIVE in that club. If you already belong to a club, please become ACTIVE in that club. If your club holds multiple events, please consider stepping out of your comfort zone and volunteer to help out at a sport that you yourself do not do. I am sure that other club members would be happy to teach and mentor you! Organizing and running all the various dog sports/events is a very labor intensive undertaking. Many hands make light work. And who knows?? You might discover a sport that you might love to participate in!! Without volunteers, these sports/events may not be held in the future. Think about that...

Some resources for A.K.C. Fetch training / retriever training.

Positive Gun Dogs: Clicker Training for Sporting Breeds (Karen Pryor Clicker Books) by Jim Barry, Mary Emmen
Force-free retriever training:
This book covers the basics of how force-free training can be incorporated into retriever training. After the concepts in this book are understood and one wants to learn more, it's best to get other sources for more drills and higher-skill foundational stuff. Even though a lot of training methods in retriever training systems contain force, it is relatively easy to remove the force and utilize the rest of the system if you understand the basics.

Retriever Training: A Back-to-Basics Approach by Robert Milner
A good book for basic drills.

DVD - Fowl Dawgs DVD Series with Rick Stawski
A good DVD set. Especially good for the beginner hunt dog trainer because Rick Stawski does demos with UNTRAINED DOGS. This gives the viewer a much more accurate idea of what to expect from their own dog. (most pros demonstrate with already trained dogs).

We got a nice compliment from Fetch match participant Jerry:
"I would like to thank sportsman‘s DogTraining organization for the chance to participate in the Fetch practice event.
The host, judges and club helpers were all very pleasant and extremely helpful in helping the participants understand this exciting new event."
