Cindy Valoura - Cross Equine Consulting, LLC Natural Hoof Care by Cindy Valoura I can help you and your horse transition to barefoot or maintain an optimum barefoot lifestyle through the Natural Trim. Cindy

Not all barefoot trims are the same and some are downright harmful. The "Natural Trim" is a barefoot trim method that mimics the hoof wear patterns of U.S. Great Basin wild horses. It is non-invasive and encourages the hoof to develop in a way that will provide the best shape, support and structure for the individual horse. Shoeing does not allow for such hoof development which can lead to problem

s for the hoof and the horse. The wild horse hoof is a strong, healthy model of what a hoof should be and it has much to teach us about the care of domestic hooves. It is fascinating to see a hoof transform following de-shoeing and a regular cycle of natural trimming. The horse begins grows the right hoof for his body and can feel his feet in a very different way. Questions? Contact me by phone, email or through Facebook!

Although Jaime Jackson began advocating for more natural horse care practices with the release of his 1992 book, "The Natural Horse: Lessons from the Wild," along with susbsequent books including Paddock Paradise, it does seem that real change will take place when universities, veterinarians and governmental bodies recognize that housing horses in stalls is a form of abuse and outlaw the practice.

The article from yesterday's "Daily Mail" in London' shares that 'research shows horses are miserable and stressed when kept in stalls because they do not like living alone.' Seven months into being barefoot. As I explained to the horse owner, the curved deformity of this hind hoof would resolve in time. By mimicking the natural wear patterns of the Great Basin wild horses we allow the body to receive signals from the ground that make sense rather than the chaos of shoes getting in the way. As a result the body can know where and how to place the new hoof material.

The hoof is a dynamic part of a living organism that receives feedback from the ground. Don’t nail or glue things to it.

Five weeks since the last trim.

Diet, movement over abrasive terrain and horsemanship that doesn’t impede the natural gaits are having an impact. The natural trim is only one of the four pillars of NHC (natural hoof care). Seven months into barefoot transition.

I carry, fit and sell Scoot Boots. The new TheraRide boots are impressive in their performance, comfort, ease of cleaning (just rinse) and they staying on better than any boot I’ve encountered. Thanks to client Rob Heldreth for his feedback on how they are working for he and his horses who have transitioned to barefoot this year.

"Mr. Jackson, You gave us the proof
That there is nothing more beautiful
than a natural hoof.
You opened our minds on this amazing course
to learn the spirit of the Natural Horse...."

(part of a poem presented to Jaime Jackson from the "Class of Dec. 2010" following the last day of training camp....)

A reminder that it is not hoof dressings, glue, shoes, tar, paste, adhesives or any sort of ‘hoof armour’ that results in healthy hooves that can easily move over abrasive material such as those on the wild and free-roaming horses living naturally in the U.S. Great Basin. Get the diet, trim method, environment and lifestyle right and your horse can improve just as this one did. If you have questions about feeding any horse or pony in your care, go to AANHCP.net and explore the articles.
