Holiday Tree Safety Tips for Pet Owners
At Hillcrest-Flynn, we know how much your furry family members mean to you. The holidays are a magical time, but holiday decorations—especially Christmas trees—can pose unique hazards for pets. Keep your pets safe and your holiday stress-free with these tree safety tips.
1. Secure Your Tree
Pets love to climb, nudge, and explore. Anchor your tree securely to prevent it from tipping over if your curious cat or playful pup decides to investigate. Consider using a sturdy tree stand and tying the top to a nearby wall or ceiling.
2. Skip the Tinsel
Tinsel can be irresistible to pets, especially cats, but it’s a choking hazard and can cause serious intestinal issues if ingested. Avoid using it or opt for pet-safe alternatives.
3. Choose Pet-Friendly Ornaments
• Hang breakable or valuable ornaments higher up where pets can’t reach.
• Avoid edible decorations like popcorn strings or candy canes, which can attract unwanted nibbling.
• Use shatterproof ornaments on the lower branches.
4. Mind the Water
Tree water can contain fertilizers, bacteria, or preservatives that are toxic to pets. Cover the water reservoir with a tree skirt or aluminum foil to keep your pets from drinking it.
5. Check Your Lights
• Keep light cords out of reach, as chewing on them can lead to electrical shocks.
• Use cord protectors or tape them securely to the floor or wall.
• Opt for battery-operated lights if possible.
6. Watch Out for Pine Needles
For real trees, fallen needles can be dangerous if ingested, causing mouth irritation or internal damage. Vacuum around the tree regularly to keep the area clear.
7. Supervise Your Pets
If your pets are especially curious, consider placing a baby gate or pet barrier around the tree when you’re not able to supervise.
Celebrate with Peace of Mind
The holidays are a time to enjoy with your loved ones—pets included. By taking these precautions, you can create a festive home that’s safe for every member of your family.
