Does my dog need a trim-up, full haircut, or just a good deshedding? Here's how you can tell 👇

💜 If they have a long top coat that sheds undercoat (such as Golden Retrievers, Aussies, Border Collies, Shelties, Pyrenees, etc), a deshedding treatment and trim up of the feet, chest, pants, ears, and underline can make a world of difference.

💜 If they have a short, sleek or spiky topcoat with sheddy undercoat (such as Labs, Pit Bulls, Boxers, German Shepherds, Bloodhounds, Bulldogs, etc) they probably just need a thorough de-shed job. Removing excess undercoat will help the skin breathe and leave the coat even and shiny without needing to cut any hair.

💜 If they have hair that won't shed much on its own and tends to tangle if not cut (think Poodles and Poodle mixes, Yorkies, Schnauzers, Terriers, Maltese, etc) they likely need a full haircut or hand strip, where every hair will be taken shorter.

Shedding season is upon us! If you've got a hairy dog you probably know all too well that many double coated breeds let go of their undercoat in big clumps during the spring and early summer.

Although their top coat remains the same length, their soft, finer insulating fur thins out significantly to keep them cool. However, if it's been a while since their last deshedding, this hair can remain trapped underneath last season's fur, causing tight clumps of fur known as "impacted" coat - which does not allow for proper airflow to reach the skin underneath, causing a variety of skin issues.
