Feral cats are a growing concern not only in our community but in communities worldwide. Without intervention, feral cat populations can grow rapidly, leading to environmental, health, and welfare problems.

One of the best way to combat feral cat colonies is by utilizing the Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) program. TNR is a humane and effective method of managing and reducing feral cat populations.

TNR involves the cat being trapped and then brought to the clinic for spay or neuter. While the cat is under anesthesia, they are given a Rabies vaccine, Ear Mite treatment, and an Ear Notch.

The Ear Notch is a critical component of TNR. This is a small procedure where the tip of the cat’s ear is removed either in a “V” shape or flat across the tip of the ear. Ear notching serves as a visual indication that the cat has already been neutered or spayed. Without ear notching, it would be difficult for volunteers and caregivers to distinguish between those who have already undergone the procedure and those who need to be trapped. Without this simple identification system, there would be a risk of trapping the same cat multiple times, causing unnecessary stress and potentially delaying their recovery from the surgery. The ear notch helps caregivers save time, resources, and effort, ensuring that only unaltered cats are brought in for surgery.

After surgery, the cat is then released back where it came from to live a long and healthy life! TNR not only prevents feral cat populations from growing rapidly, it also decreases the spread of diseases within the cat colony which keeps them healthier overall!

Warren County has a wonderful TNR Voucher. Ear Notches are required for all TNR surgeries as it is vital to the success of the program. Residents can obtain a $100 spay voucher or a $50 neuter voucher for feral cats from the Warren County Animal Ark, 142 Rafters Lane, Warrenton, NC 27589. The voucher will cover a portion of the pet’s surgery, a Rabies vaccination, an Ear Notch (required) and Ear Mite treatment. The voucher will not cover additional costs incurred (in-heat charges, pregnant charges, antibiotics, etc.).

The cold weather is here! With that, it is important to ensure that our pets have the proper shelter during the winter months.

In Warren County, it is the law for all pets outside to have access to a three sided shelter with a roof and a solid floor. The shelter must also be small enough to retain body heat but big enough for the dog to stand and turn around inside.

If your dogs are going to be outside, a doggy coat is a great option for keeping them warm! Pictured are the O’Malley’s dogs, Stitch, Shad, Nobi, and Shark with their winter coats on!

The cold weather can also make some pets avoid drinking as much water which can lead to dehydration. A great tip to avoid this is to add water to their kibble everyday!

We hope everybody is staying warm and cozy!

Today is National Pet Travel Safety Day!

Pets are family members, and just like humans, they need protection during travel. Having your pets secured while driving not only keeps them safe but it keeps you safe too!!

We know that everyone loves to see a happy pup, head out of the window and ears flapping in the wind!! However, the safest option for your pet is a durable carrier that has been secured to the vehicle. A loose pet in the car can be a distraction to the driver which in turn can cause accidents. In case of an accident, a durable carrier rated for impact will reduce the chance of injury while also keeping your pet confined. We see far too often pets that are lost and missing after fleeing from a vehicle during an accident.

Stay safe! Happy pets means happy Vets!!

We had the sweetest long-eared gals come to visit us this past week!

Did you know that Basset Hounds are second only to the Bloodhound in scent tracking abilities!? Yes, their long ears and and loose skin have more purpose than just being absolutely adorable. As their ears drag the ground, they stir up scents and funnel them towards their highly sensitive noses! The loose skin also helps trap scents. This combination makes for exceptional tracking abilities!

We know that everyone is excited for all of the Thanksgiving activities! Please be mindful about what your pets are getting to eat! Here is a list of a few foods that are okay to feed your pet and a few that are not!

Please remember that even though the foods are listed as safe, always feed in moderation and without seasonings/bones/skin. Thanksgiving treats should not replace your pet’s normal diet and pay close attention to what you are feeding our four legged friends that have allergies!
