Starting September 1st, there will be some changes to the structure of Spay/Neuter Vouchers through the shelter. The shelter was able to renew a portion of funds for this program with a few changes. The shelter will be offering the following vouchers:

Fix My Pit (this is for Pit Bull breeds ONLY and will be verified at the clinic - includes a Rabies shot and a 24 hour pain injection) the shelter will pay for the entirety of the surgery cost but no additional costs.

TNR (Trap and Release Feral Cats - includes a Rabies shot, Ear Notch (required), and Mite Treatment) $100 vouchers will be given for spays and $50 vouchers given for neuters.

Adopted Pets (Pets adopted from the shelter directly will receive a voucher - includes a Rabies shot and a 24 hour pain injection) $150 vouchers will be given for Canine Spays and $100 vouchers will be given for Canine Neuters. $100 vouchers will be given for Feline Spays and $50 vouchers will be given for Feline Neuters.

Low Income (residents that receive government assistance can receive the surgeries for free, you must apply at the shelter) these vouchers cover the entire surgery amount, a Rabies shot, and a 24 hour pain injection, however, they do not cover any additional costs.

From now on, ALL vouchers that come from the shelter MUST BE PICKED UP AT THE SHELTER. We will now only take physical vouchers for surgeries.

It is important to know that the vouchers from the shelter will NOT cover the entire cost of the surgery (unless indicated) or any additional costs (antibiotics, e-collar, bloodwork, pain medication, microchips, pets that are in heat, pets that are pregnant etc.) The owner will be responsible for any charges above the coupon amount. Our team is more than happy to create estimates for your specific pet and go over the expected cost of the surgery.

We are still working with the Town of Warrenton to get grant money for Warren County Residents. The grant application was submitted today and we are hopeful that we will be able to offer assistance to Residents very soon.

We are all working very hard to keep these programs up and running because they are VITAL to the health of our community. Please if you are able, purchase a T-shirt, a raffle ticket, or round up at your next appointment. Every little bit counts!

If you saw our previous post regarding the Spay and Neuter Program changes, please disregard. The Warren County Animal Shelter will no longer be offering Warren County Resident specific vouchers - they are only offering vouchers for Fix My Pit, TNR, Adopted Pets, and Low Income (you must be a Warren County Resident to receive these vouchers but must fall into one of the above categories).

Let’s talk allergies!! Pictured here is the O’Malley’s, Shad ❤️

Shad unfortunately has not had the easiest time with his allergies, in short, he is allergic to just about everything but rabbit!! This can make keeping his allergies under control quite a feat. Between trying to control his environment and control what he is eating, it is really difficult! Here are a few options that we have used for Shad and are also available for your pets!

1️⃣ Apoquel - Apoquel is a pill that can be given daily or as needed. Apoquel works by disrupting the immune response that causes itching and inflammation. Apoquel can be used long term and has minimal side effects but has to be given orally.

2️⃣ Cytopoint - Cytopoint is a monoclonal antibody injection that also helps relieve itching and inflammation by blocking the signal that triggers itching! Cytopoint is typically given every 4-8 weeks but can be given more seldomly depending on how your dog responds to the medication!

3️⃣ Oral Allergy Drops - Allergy Drops are the newest tool in our tool box when it comes to maintaining allergies! A blood test is done and sent off to the lab. Once at the lab, the blood is tested to find out what specific allergies your dog has. From there, a custom allergy drop is created and sent to you. These drops are given orally and act similar to a vaccine - your dog’s allergens are put into these drops and allow your dog to create an immunity to these allergens.

Shad has been on Oral Allergy Drops for about 6 months now and has shown great improvement! If you are curious about which option would be best for your dog, make sure to ask our team at your next appointment!

If your pets have gotten a surgery with us here at WAC, you have probably been asked “Would you like an e-collar?”

Let’s talk about WHY e-collars are so important for your pets when they come home from surgery!

Before surgery, whether it is a spay, neuter, growth removal, or suturing an injury, the surgical site is scrubbed and sterilized. This is to ensure that no bacteria can make it’s way into the area! At the end of the procedure, the area is closed using sutures or surgical glue. It is incredibly important that the surgical site stay closed and clean during the healing process.

Enter our number one friend - the e-collar!! Surgical sites can sometimes be itchy and irritating for our pets, thus they tend to want to lick! When licking or chewing, your pet can not only open up the incision but also introduce bacteria to the area which can cause unnecessary risk of infection!

It is SUPER important to keep your pet from licking their incision. You want to keep the area dry and clean while it heals from surgery. This can be done using a plastic cone type e-collar or a donut type e-collar as pictured here.

Because of our wonderful vets, most surgeries are a walk in the park for our pets! Keep them calm, quiet, clean, and dry and your pets will be back to normal in just a few short weeks!

Happy Pets means Happy Vets!!

Fluffy has a cut on his leg!! What do I do!?

The first thing is to never panic! Staying calm allows your pet to stay calm.

There can be a lot of confusion and misinformation when it comes to cleaning wounds at home. If there is ever a question of IF your pet should come to the clinic for an injury, give us a call and let our staff help you through that decision making process.

For simple “bumps and bruises” that do not need stitches but do need cleaning at home, here is what we are going to do!

First off, if there is bleeding, apply pressure to stop the bleeding. If you are struggling to stop the bleeding, this is most likely a sign that your pet needs to come into the clinic.

Second, never use peroxide in an open wound. Although hydrogen peroxide does have antimicrobial properties, it can actually be an irritant for most wounds! Rinse the wound with lukewarm water only.

You can apply some triple antibiotic cream if you are worried about infection and most people already have this at home. Vetricyn is also a great option if you have it on hand. We sell small bottles here at the clinic that can be kept at home for situations like this.

Again, if you are ever questioning whether your pet needs to come into the clinic, please give us a call. We would rather walk you through the process instead of having to treat a wound days later. AND DON’T PANIC!!

Happy Pets means Happy Vets😊

We have an update on our Low Cost Spay and Neuter Program! We are partnering with the Town of Warrenton to hopefully bring back the grant money for low cost spay and neuters. We are in the process of creating our own 5013c in order to apply for the grants. This way, there is no middle man and the clinic will be able to apply for any and all grants that we see a need for in the community. We want to send out a HUGE thank you to the town of Warrenton for helping us through this process! There is a lot of paperwork and details that we are still working through, so please be patient as these things take time.

And again, these programs are created with the help of grant money but donations from the community allow it to thrive. If you are able, please purchase a WAC t-shirt ($30 with 25% of the proceeds going to low cost spay and neuters) or simply round up when checking out at your next appointment.

CPPI is going to keep covering the cost of Trap, Neuter, and Release cats, Fix My Pit, and adopted animals out of the shelter.

Thank you for all of your support! We are working very hard to bring these programs back to Warren County!!

Hi WAC family! We will no longer be filling prescriptions through Chewy.com. There have been some compliance issues - in short - it has come to our attention that Chewy may be manufacturing and selling drugs and products that have not been FDA approved.

A few months ago we switched pharmacies to Covetrus Pharmacy. Covetrus offers free shipping and price matching. Because of the rising costs of these products, we will no longer be carrying long term medications in house. We want to be able to offer these products in the most money efficient way that we can. We will also be charging a one time, annually fee of $25 to write a prescription to an outside pharmacy. Again, we will no longer be approving prescriptions through Chewy and the outside pharmacy must be FDA approved.

Ordering your medications and even prescription foods is just as easy through Covetrus. If you have not made an account, please do so now through this link! We want to make sure that the products we are approving are safe for your pets! If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Accidents happen. Puff is a living reminder to stay cautious and always think about what COULD happen.

On the way to the clinic, in an attempt to keep Puff safe, his parents had him tethered to the back seat. Unfortunately, Puff did jump out of the window while the car was moving, resulting in extensive damage to all four paws.

We are grateful to report that after weeks of surgeries and rehabilitation, Puff is now home and doing very well. Although he may have to wear booties sometimes because of the damage to his paw pads, he is back to his happy, normal self.

This situation could have ended very differently. We are blessed in that we were able to save Puff. Please, especially in a moving vehicle, make sure that your pets are secure.

🔥 HEAT STROKE 🔥

Our summers here in NC can be HOT and it is important that we know how to keep our dogs safe!

Heat stroke occurs when your dog’s body temperature rises above a safe level. Dogs are more susceptible to heat stroke because they cannot sweat like humans! Dogs primarily cool themselves through pantings, which is significantly less effective in extreme heat.

Signs and Symptoms of Heat Stroke:

☀️ Excessive Panting and Drooling

☀️ Red or Pale Gums and Tongue

☀️ Elevated Heart Rate

☀️ Weakness or Lethargy

☀️ Dizziness or Staggering

☀️ Vomiting and Diarrhea

☀️ Collapse or Unconsciousness

First steps:

1️⃣ Call the Vet!

2️⃣ Move to a cool area, preferably your air-conditioned car on the way to the clinic

3️⃣ Provide water (if your dog is conscious enough to drink on their own)

Heat Stroke can be fatal and it is important that your dog gets Veterinary attention as soon as possible!

Tips for Avoiding Heat Stroke:

💧Keep outdoor activities to a minimum during the heat of the day

💧Provide Shade and Fresh Water 24/7

💧NEVER leave your dog in a car - even with the windows cracked the temperature inside a car can rise to deadly levels within minutes

💧Know your dog - be extra cautious with dogs that are older, overweight, or have thick fur

Once at the clinic, we are able to treat your dog for heat stroke. Please do not try to treat your dog at home - always go to the Vet for potential Heat Stroke!
