Acupuncture focuses on balancing the energy or ‘Qi’ within the body by treating specific points along the meridians (think of these as ‘Qi’ highways). This is to optimize overall health and organ function. The beauty of acupuncture is it can be used to PREVENT problems, rather than just treat them after they occur (although it can help with that too!).

When treating a patient with acupuncture, it’s helpful to identify their primary element. In Chinese medicine we all have 5 components to our overall energy, but our personality tends to determine which is most dominant. This can help determine what imbalances the patient is most prone to and help better provide support to prevent those issues before they begin. The dominant element can change with age, life changes/stresses, seasons, etc.

The five elements are:

1. Fire (Heart) ‘The Emperor’
2. Earth (Spleen) ‘The Mother’
3. Metal (Lung) ‘The Organizer’
4. Water (Kidney) ‘The Observer’
5. Wood (Liver) ‘The General’

I’ll follow up soon with a post on each element!

It came to my attention yesterday that my appointment reminder emails are sending out inaccurate times. They’re listing an hour LATER than the actual appointment time. I’ve reached out to iPoint to work on correcting this, and I’ve touched base with all of my appointments for tomorrow. However, I wanted to give everyone a heads up. If you’re unsure of your appointment time, please reach out to me directly. Thank you!! 😘

💉 The literal “shot heard round the world”. It sounds like a horse received Flunixin or Banamine intramuscularly on an episode of last night? We would like to remind everyone that despite being labeled for intra-muscular use, horses should only ever receive this drug orally or intra-venously. Something that the folks at Yellowstone would need to be on the lookout for after this misplaced administration would be signs of gas and swelling under the neck or a painful injection site. Administering IM banamine to a horse can cause clostridial myositis and can lead to a serious infection that requires surgical and antibiotic intervention. Despite intervention, these infections can be fatal.

Some of my bigger barn appointments with have the pleasure of meeting Amanda. We worked together many moons ago, and I’m so excited to team up with her again! She’ll be helping with holding horses for exams and treatments when their owners can’t be present. She brings years of equine and veterinary technician experience to the table and I’m so lucky to have her. 🤩🥰

Dr. Koch graciously let me follow her around for a few days to complete my acupuncture internship hours. She’s a wonderful lady! I know many are looking ways to help, so I wanted to pass her post about hurricane relief along.
