As this winter storm moves across the country, remember that it’s important to ensure horses are kept warm, hydrated, and protected from the elements. Here are some cold weather tips from Excel Equine🐴
❄️ When temps are below 20-30° even unclipped horses should be wearing a medium-heavy blanket
❄️ Feed lots of quality hay to keep body temps up - When horses are digesting forage, typically in the for of hay during the winter months, heat is produced within the body
❄️ Ensure horses have access to fresh, unfrozen water and electrolytes to prevent dehydration
❄️ Ensure horses have access to some form of shelter
❄️ Metabolic requirements often increase during cold weather, horses maintained on forage only diets during the summer may need the addition of a concentrated feed to their diet over the winter months to maintain body condition
