Albert Heath lives in Okatie, South Carolina, about 10 miles west of Hilton Head. He reports that he and his Seeing Eye dog, Filbert, are safe and sound in the wake of Hurricane Ian.

"Ian visited but he didn't stay for very long. I've had thunderstorms worse than that one," Albert said.

The hurricane didn't bother Filbert, Albert reported. "Filbert didn't even get out of bed. Thunder booms and he doesn't even raise his head."

Speaking of booms, Albert is a U.S. Army veteran who served in an Artillery unit. "It wasn't too bad," he said. "I got to ride around on a tank."

The photo shows Albert, wearing a U.S. Army Veteran baseball cap, with his arm around Filbert, a black Labrador retriever in harness.

Albert first came to The Seeing Eye in 2013 to be matched with a black Labrador retriever named Bishop, who is now retired and living with Albert as a pet dog.

"Filbert and Bishop get along great. They love to play with each other," Albert said. "I think Bishop gets a little jealous sometimes that he's not guiding anymore. When I put Filbert in the harness, sometimes Bishop tries to wiggle in between us thinking he's going too."

Today is a very special day for two reasons. First, it's International Guide Dog Day! But just as important, today is when our new class of students meet their Seeing Eye dogs! We call it โ€œDog day Wednesdayโ€ - and all dogs get a bath before they are given to their new partners. This cute golden retriever is all ready for his big day!

PD is a blonde Golden retriever sitting facing the camera. He is in the tub room of the kennel. He has just finished getting his bath and is wrapped up like a burrito in a towel. All you see is the top of his head, eyes and snout and one paw sticking out of the bottom of the towel and his tail out the back He is very relaxed and seems to enjoy it.

The Seeing Eye mourns the passing of long-time supporter, advocate, and friend Betty White. The photo shows Betty, wearing a blue dress, bending over to greet a Seeing Eye dog -- a yellow Labrador retriever.

All of us at The Seeing Eye will miss her kindness, her wisdom, and her amazing laugh.

Many new challenges for Guide Dogs ๐Ÿฆฎ

Yesterday we had a doctor appointment at IU. Zoe was so excited to be in harness and working someplace that was busy and challenging. After checking in, we went to the waiting room and I asked her to find a chair. She paused and looked around and then headed straight forward for several feet and came to a stop in front of an empty chair. I praised her and sat down. I had a couple of bags with me, so I could work if there was a wait and went to put them in the chair next to me, but realized that the chair and many around us had tape on top of them to make sure that patients were social distancing. That is when I realized that Zoe understood that I could not sit in one of those chairs and looked for an โ€œopenโ€ chair. I felt so much joy in this realization and recognized how much I missed working with her everyday and witnessing how she thinks as a team and overcomes challenges.
PD: Zoe is laying in harness next to a row of blue chairs in the doctorโ€™s office. The three chairs ahead of her have xโ€™s of blue painters tape across them and signs on the seat telling patients not to sit there.
