I am an active member of the International Association of Canine Professionals. I hold the position of Canine Good Citizen Evaluator for the American Kennel Club as well as being certified in Canine CPR/ First Aid.

Living with these dogs is so stressful.
You cannot exercise these dogs enough.❗
You "need" to walk them for huge distances ❗
These dogs are hard to walk, they pull and you are often dragged far behind.
They may spin, jump, bark and react , it won't stop....so they are walked longer and faster.
All that does is build more stamina.
Physically tiring or exhausting a dog does not mean you will have a calm dog ,they are just physically exhausted.
There is a very big difference between the two.
You can make a difference, start exercising them just a bit less.... everyday and spend that time engaging their brain.
I promise you it works.✅

Amanita mushrooms are popping out of the ground this week, they are one of the deadliest types of mushrooms that grow. At OSVS we have seen multiple mushroom toxicity cases in the past few years. We are sharing the most common clinical signs of mushroom poisoning in dogs:

• Drooling
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Weakness/lethargy
• Abnormal heartbeat
• Trouble breathing
• Uncoordinated movements/stumbling
• Disorientation
• Increased drinking and urinating
• Yellow discoloration to gums and eyes
• Tremors/seizures

There are over 10,000 species of mushrooms in the United States, but only about 100 are toxic. However, it can be difficult to accurately identify mushrooms to determine which are safe and which are poisonous. Mushroom poisoning in dogs may affect pets quickly (within 15-30 minutes after ingestion), but they can also be delayed up to 24 hours. It may take 2-3 days to see evidence of liver and kidney failure. All mushroom ingestions by pets should be considered potentially toxic, and should be seen by a veterinarian immediately. Mushroom poisoning in dogs can be fatal, so do not wait until clinical signs are noted.

All Terriers bark like crazy at everything ❌
Every GSD will nip/bite.❌
Chihuahuas are all aggressive.❌
These are dismissive and blanket statements✅
Some people are convinced ALL of their dogs issues are related to their breed traits. Some are convinced their dogs unwanted behaviour IS because of their breed...when there is NO connection of the issues they have to their breed at all.

Breed does matter however it doesn't mean that unwanted behaviour should be dismissed as "just the way they are".
Just because a dog has a breed trait making them more prone to be vocal during certain activities doesn't mean the non stop barking when left at home or vocalising and lunges at dogs walking past IS a breed trait.❗
If a dog nips/bites children/family/people or anyone....don't just dismiss this as a breed trait from a herding or working breed.❗

Often in Facebook groups these issues that people face are dismissed as "just the way they are".......No....it isn't.

Summer is creeping up on us and so are the weekend getaways and vacations. This advice is great for those who might be looking after your pet but ALSO for your Vet Clinic. There is nothing worse than having a pet come in for an emergency and having no permissions to treat the animal on the file because the owners are unreachable and the pet sitter doesn't know what the decision might be for CPR or other treatments. Plan for the unexpected and enjoy your time away.

*FOUND*
This sweet girl was found in the Dayton Court area last night 4/4. She is a young female puppy with no collar, no tag, no microchip. She appears to be a boxer/pit bull/cur mixed breed and her tail is docked. She is safe at the NK Animal Shelter.
If anyone has any information on this cutie please call #294-3316 ex: 8251
Medical history/proof of ownership will need to be provided upon release.

Working on the recall command requires the dog to be able to wait for the command. Here we have Biscuit (a very impatient girl) learning to have patience until she’s called. First we teach the skill which is what you are seeing here. We can then add the E-Collar with it to assure off leash control.
