We are celebrating Black History Month by paying tribute to the remarkable Dr. Frederick Douglass Patterson, a pioneer in Veterinary Medicine and beyond.

Born in Washington, DC, and raised in Texas after losing his parents at age two, Dr. Patterson overcame adversity to earn a doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State College in 1923, later adding a Master of Science degree in 1927.

Under his sister's guidance and a commitment to education, Frederick thrived, eventually teaching veterinary science at Virginia State College and becoming Director of Agriculture. In 1928, he embarked on a transformative journey at Tuskegee University, initially heading the veterinary division and later becoming the institution's third president.

In 1944, Dr. Patterson's legacy expanded as he founded both the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine. This groundbreaking move aimed to provide African Americans with opportunities to study veterinary medicine during a time of segregation and racial barriers.

The impact of TUCVM is evident today, having graduated nearly 75% of the nation's African American Veterinarians. Dr. Frederick Douglass Patterson's vision and dedication continue to resonate, leaving a lasting mark on the history of veterinary education.
