⚠️ Safety Reminder for Pet Owners in DC ⚠️

Recent incidents of stray voltage on DC sidewalks tragically claimed the lives of two dogs. This serves as a crucial reminder for pet owners to take extra precautions, especially during winter.

Kate Meghji, Humane Rescue Alliance’s COO, advises:
β€œRubber-soled boots or booties are a barrier that could be between your dog’s paws and the ground.” Dog shoes can also keep your dog’s paws from making direct contact with road salt: β€œThe salt that people put outβ€”some of it is pet-friendly and some of it is not, and so if it gets in your pet’s paws and they lick it, that could cause some distress.”

πŸ”— To learn more about the risks and how to protect your dog, read the full article in the Washingtonian here: https://www.washingtonian.com/2025/01/09/how-to-keep-your-dog-safe-from-stray-voltage-on-dc-streets/

AWLOA offers cold weather tips.

Weather alert! β„οΈπŸš¨Extremely cold freezing temps wintery weather will be here soon. Please keep in mind these safety tips to keep both our pets and wild neighbors safe.

All animals react differently to the cold, even if they’re considered β€œcold-weather” animals. Age, health, regular exposure to the cold and more can affect how an animal may experience health consequences in freezing temps.

β–ͺ️ At 32 degrees or less, ideally no dog or cat should be left outdoors.
β–ͺ️ If animals have to be outside, they should have access to a well-insulated structure with a wind block and heated water bowl to ensure access to fresh unfrozen water.
β–ͺ️ Use lots of straw to insulate the structure. Do not use blankets or any material bedding, as they soak up moisture from the air and the animal’s feet, which will make the animal colder.
β–ͺ️ If you’re concerned about an outdoor cat, consider making a weather-safe container from a cheap Styrofoam cooler, adding straw bedding and a hole for entry.
β–ͺ️ Shorten your dog's walk if the temps are freezing.
β–ͺ️ After walks, clean paw pads to prevent any chemical or melting agents from injuring your dog’s paws or being ingested.
β–ͺ️ Consider additional clothing – beyond the fur coat – for your animal. However, it should properly fit the pet, and pets should never be left unattended in clothing.
β–ͺ️ Watch for warning signs that an animal may be getting too cold, including shaking, sleepiness, slowed breathing, mobility, issues, dry skin, numbness or illness. Seek veterinary care ASAP if you see signs of numbness or illness.
β–ͺ️ Don’t forget about our wild animal neighbors. They may use parked vehicles for wind blocks. Make plenty of noise and give them time to make an exit before driving away.
