Ever wonder what's in your food? AVMA joined the Senate Veterinary Medicine Caucus for a discussion on the important role public practice veterinarians play as the unsung heroes of food safety. The National Association of Federal Veterinarians highlighted the need to recruit and retain veterinary medical professionals in the public practice workforce.

Representatives from the Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank (FARAD) emphasized the importance securing the appropriate funding through the Farm Bill to safeguard the program’s ability to protect our nation’s food supply. FARAD is a university-based national program that has been utilized by veterinary practitioners as the primary resource to provide recommendations on safe drug withdrawal intervals for drugs used in food-producing animals.

The AVMA is advocating for Congress to reauthorize FARAD at increased funding levels in the new Farm Bill to ensure our food supply stays safe, secure, and affordable.
