Onco Tidbits of Knowledge.🐾

Comparative oncology is valuable because it leverages the similarities between human and animal cancers to accelerate research, improve treatments, and deepen our understanding of cancer biology in general. By studying naturally occurring cancers in animals, particularly dogs, researchers can gain insights that are directly applicable to human cancer research and treatment.
🐾
Here's a breakdown of why comparative oncology is so valuable:
Shared Genetic and Environmental Factors:
Humans and animals, especially dogs, often share similar environments and are exposed to the same carcinogens, making them valuable models for studying cancer risk factors and prevention strategies.

Accelerated Research:
Some animal models, like dogs, experience a faster disease course than humans, allowing researchers to observe cancer progression and treatment response more quickly, potentially leading to faster breakthroughs.

Translational Research:
Findings from comparative oncology studies can be directly translated into human cancer research, leading to the development of new diagnostic tools, therapeutic strategies, and preventive measures for both humans and animals.

Improved Treatment Outcomes:
Through comparative studies, researchers can identify new drug targets, evaluate novel therapies, and personalize treatments based on individual genetic profiles, benefiting both human and animal patients.

Identification of Cancer-Causing Genes:
By studying cancer in different species, researchers can identify genes and molecular pathways involved in cancer development, potentially leading to the development of targeted therapies and personalized medicine approaches.

Enhanced Understanding of Cancer Biology:
The comparative approach allows researchers to examine cancer across species, potentially uncovering universal mechanisms of cancer development, progression, and metastasis, leading to a broader understanding of the disease.

Novel Therapeutic Strategies:
Comparative oncology has proven valuable in evaluating novel treatment strategies for various cancers, including immunotherapy and gene therapy, which can benefit both humans and animals.

Improved Clinical Trial Outcomes:
Animal clinical trial data can provide valuable insights into the efficacy and safety of new cancer treatments, increasing the success rate of human clinical trials and accelerating drug approval processes.

In essence, comparative oncology bridges the gap between human and animal medicine, fostering a collaborative approach to cancer research that benefits both species. It provides valuable insights into cancer biology, facilitates the development of new treatments, and ultimately aims to improve cancer outcomes for both humans and animals.🐾

Discovered: New Insights on Dogs with Liver Nodules Associated with Splenic Tumor Rupture.

PetCure Oncology continues to lead the way. 🐾❤️🐾

The discovery of liver nodules in dogs who have experienced hemoperitoneum (bleeding in the abdomen) as a result of splenic tumor rupture can prompt concerns regarding metastatic disease. However new research has uncovered a substantial nuance: the majority of liver nodules in these instances are benign.

A recent study published in JAVMA in August 2024 reveals that liver nodules associated with splenic tumor rupture are only metastatic 19% of the time when biopsied.

Article Key Takeaways:
In dogs with splenic tumor rupture, liver nodules identified on ultrasound frequently manifest as benign lesions. This distinction is essential for devising an effective treatment plan.
Liver nodules that were discovered preoperatively were only 19% metastatic upon biopsy.
Ultrasounds performed before surgery failed to detect 22% of liver lesions that were subsequently discovered during surgery.
Benign splenic tumors were more frequently associated with the presence of liver nodules on ultrasound than malignant ones.

Study Repercussions:
Exclusively using ultrasound may lead to misdiagnosis in dogs with splenic tumor rupture.
More comprehensive imaging techniques, such as CT or MRI, are advisable.
Veterinarians should refrain from making definitive decisions regarding metastasis solely on the basis of ultrasound findings.

At Petcure Oncology in Clifton, NJ, they provide comprehensive evaluations including advanced diagnostic capabilities including MRI and CT - delivered by their team of oncology experts - even for cases where radiation therapy is not the recommended treatment.

They’re here to offer your patients the most appropriate treatment options, regardless of whether they are suspected of having benign or malignant disease.

Clinical trials are research studies that help Colorado State University improve diagnostic tests and treatment options. Their clinical trials program enrolls client-owned pets to evaluate the effectiveness of new drugs, find novel uses of old drugs, or investigate new approaches to surgery and/or radiation therapy to treat cancer.

Many of the standard treatments used today are the result of clinical trials. They learn valuable information from every patient, and we use this information to improve their care as well as the care of future patients, both pets and people.

Canine lymphoma: new approaches to diagnostics and treatment

Dec 14, 2023
By Shannon Stolz, Senior Editor of Special Projects

“[Phenotyping] provides me information when I see the case and allows me to make more streamlined consult with the owners,” said Craig A. Clifford, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Oncology), at the recent Fetch dvm360 conference in Long Beach, California.1 As the veterinary industry shifts toward more individualized care approaches, canine lymphoma treatments and diagnostics are undergoing notable change. Because the different types of lymphoma have varying survivability rates and respond to treatment differently, the veterinary world is starting to put more focus on the initial prognosis.

Phenotyping
Prior to planning treatment for canine lymphoma, a crucial step is to determine which classification the patient falls into; around one third of dogs are considered to have T-cell lymphoma, while around two thirds are considered to have B-cell lymphoma, and
