‼️Attention to intact male dog owners‼️
As you may be aware, Dr. Mary does offer alternative methods of sterilization and delayed neutering due to potential adverse health consequences due to early neutering. We were recently contacted by an individual that is supporting a company that is developing a screening test that will help give dog owners peace of mind about recognizing when their dogs have reached sexual maturity and are physiologically ready for neutering, allowing them and their veterinary team to balance concerns for their individual dog’s long-term health with animal welfare and overpopulation concerns. They believe this test will make it simpler for vets to have clear answers when pet owners ask, “When is the right time to neuter my dog?” We are looking for clients that own intact male dogs (the company is particularly interested in Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Beagles and French Bulldog). Your pet will need an exam and blood draw (cost that will be covered by the research company) and you will need to sign a consent form. If interested, please contact the office ASAP at 908-689-0773

If you thought crates and kennels are a bad thing, please speak to Jet and Stevie!
Dogs are den animals, they like confined spaces to rest and get away from the world. Fox and wolf dens are claustrophobic by human standards.
Whether I’m sitting at the desk or not you’ll find these two hunkered down underneath it, despite having ample room in the office. Jet will even open her crate door at night, to go inside. They both sleep in crates at night.
There are so many reasons to create train your dog, for me the most important one is to minimize your furry friend’s anxiety when they have to be crated like at the veterinary office, groomer, boarding or when traveling in your vehicle.
Same thing goes for cats, though not considered a den animal, getting your cat used to a carrier or crate is equally important. It can actually become a safe place for the cat that has gotten used to it, because it becomes part of the cat’s territory.
Crate training both species is relatively simple and can make your pets life so much safer.🐱🐶

February is National Pet Dental Health Month! 🦷🪥🐶😺
Your pets dental health is just as important as your own dental health is!

Here are some facts about pet dental health and why it is SO important:
•Periodontal disease can cause inflammation and infection which can make your pets mouth very painful
•Dental disease can cause damage to organs such as their heart, liver and kidneys.
•Providing good dental hygiene for your pet can add 2-4 years onto their life!
•The problem isn’t always obvious to see with the naked eye, this is why dental x-rays are performed (under anesthesia) to see below the gum line and the roots of the teeth
•Approximately 80% of cats and dogs have some kind of dental disease by the age of 3

Brushing your pets teeth and occasional dental cleanings under anesthesia can help avoid these issues!
Keep an eye out for more interesting dental facts and hacks throughout this month!🦷
