Nate
I visited Nate the Detroit firehouse kitty today! 😻
Nate, now Chip Dip, was adopted 2.5 months ago and is living his best life! His momma absolutely adores and spoils him, he has a brother kitty that is his best buddy and a sister kitty who is grateful to have him around!
His sister was adopted from me a few years ago. A lady had passed away leaving her kitty, BB8, looking for a new family. I found the perfect home for her and they kept the name in honor and memory of her mom.
The family had since gotten a second cat. The second cat, Oreo wanted a play BB8 and she wanted nothing do with him. That’s where Nate comes in! When I was contacted, I knew Nate would be the perfect fit to play with a big brother and be respectful and leave BB8 alone.
Nate Chip Dip fits in perfectly in his home and it was so good to see him. He has all the personality and I’m so happy he is living his best life. 😻
Meet Gertrude… an 8 years old feral. Gertrude means “strength of a spear” and it seems incredibly fitting for this old lady street cat. This is the oldest TNR cat in the neighborhood so far. In the past couple years I’ve helped TNR well over 200 cats here. Most are less than 2 years old. These poor cats tend to have much shorter lives out there than indoor cats have. This feisty lady though…8 years!!! She thrashed around in the trap way more than most when trapped and throughout the process. Putting it lightly, she was pissed off! I couldn’t uncover and open that trap door fast enough for her for the release. No more babies for you though, little lady. Welcome to retirement. If she had 3 litters a year for 8 years, that would be 24 litters of kittens in her life. Some of the litters may have been larger in her younger days, some may have been smaller litters as she aged, but she very likely had anywhere between 50-100 kittens in her lifetime. So grateful to have gotten her fixed so she can hopefully have a much more relaxing rest of her life, being left alone by male cats and not dealing with babies. Keep that “strength of a spear” fighter spirit out there, Gertrude. You are one of the toughest street cats I have ever met.
😻
Welcome to life off the streets, tiny sir! 😻
This guy went in for TNR last week and was going to go back outside after. He had an outdoor caregiver who was eager to have him back and continue looking after him. She had been spending hours every day outside trying to make friends with him.
He went for surgery and came back. He was covered in poop from laying in it in the trap. I decided to take him out of the trap and risk bathing a feral kitten solo because I couldn’t put him back out like that. He was a little potato! Didn’t fight me at all.
A couple hours after the bath, I tried snuggling him and this is what happened. What a sweet guy!!!! I sent his outdoor caregiver this video and we both knew there’s no way this guy could go back out.
If you’re questioning why a kitten would potentially even go back out, most are feral by his age. Rescues are full. I’m full. There’s an overpopulation epidemic and more cats than available homes. We can’t save them all, but we can TNR them and try to give them a better life. That was the plan with this guy…until I realized quite how sweet he was.
This lady did a fantastic job socializing him outside!! He’s so sweet and loving! Then…she did the right thing and willingly gave him the chance at an indoor home. Not everyone makes that decision. Some are attached and want to keep them, no matter what. This lady was selfless. She chose what’s best for HIM once she saw how relaxed and happy he seemed inside. The timid nervous guy from outside melted away in my lap and he just purred up a storm, flipped around rubbing all over my legs and looked up at me with such gratitude.
His biological brother JJ came off the streets a couple weeks ago and is in rescue. His momma has been TNR’d and this wonderful lady will continue caring for her. JJ and this sweet little sir will find wonderful homes and not have to live life on the streets, thanks to this wonderful lady who spent so much time trying to socialize him
10 days ago Gabriel came off the streets severely flea infested, crawling in maggots, with a belly full of worms and severely anemic on the verge of needing a blood transfusion…he is doing so much better!!!! Gabe is such a sweet little fighter. 🥰
4 years ago today, the Community Cat Care page was born when these 7 babies were. What a journey it has been!!!!
Rescues were full and this momma cat showed up and had 7 babies. I didn’t know what to do! I never took care of newborn kittens before. I never found homes for cats before. I was clueless, but I figured it out.
I created a page called Nugget Plus 7. I figured if people could follow the journey from birth, that might help me find adopters for Nugget and her 7 kittens. It worked! I figured it out without a rescue stepping up and found Mom and all 7 babies amazing furever homes.
Then I disabled the page. Mission accomplished!
I had no idea a few months later I would move into a neighborhood overrun with cats. I reactivated that page and changed the name to Community Cat Care with the goal of helping the cats in my little community.
Since then, I’ve averaged helping more than 1 street cat per day via TNR and adoptions of friendly adults and kittens. I have followers across the country and around the world. It still blows my mind what this journey has turned into.
People often questions why there is nobody to step up and help them with animals in need…rescues are full and drowning. There aren’t enough of us to keep up with the overpopulation. So next time you are looking for help and can’t find it….maybe it’s because it’s YOUR turn to be that somebody. YOU can be their hero and help them. YOU can change lives and make a difference. 💘
Gabriel is such a little fighter! He has an overwhelming will to live. After being found outside 48 hours ago severely flea infested, crawling with maggots, severely dehydrated, malnourished, and anemic…he is fighting so hard to live! He drank water on his own for the first time today! He had a solid poop! He has some energy and wants all the snuggles! Lots of baby steps in the right direction today. He is not out of the woods yet, but is headed in the right direction. 💘
Gabriel was at the vet today for a follow up from the ER visit yesterday. He has improved some from yesterday, but is not out of the woods yet. He did find his voice today and it made me so happy to hear. This little one is a heck of a fighter!
His gums are still incredibly pale, bordering white. He smells aweful from infection even though he’s been cleaned up and is on meds. He is still very dehydrated in general, but has gotten fluids yesterday and today, as well as me adding food to his water and syringling some to him. The fleas are gone. The maggots are gone. We’re working on the killing the worms. He’s a good eater overall.
Little Gabriel is still fighting hard to get better. Thank you for helping me fight for him. He has a follow up appointment again next week, unless he gets any worse at all, in which case we will be back at the ER vet.

2 weeks ago today I started the series of Rabies Post Exposure Prophylaxis. Today was the final shot. Here’s what happened…
I got a call very late at night after trapping of a kitty screaming under a car. I was able to secure the kitty, got it home, and was loving on it for a minute…when it out of nowhere it turned and bit me and latched on. I’ve been bit numerous times. I deal with feral cats, it comes with the territory. I’ve never had a cat latch onto my finger and make noises like Kujo for 20 seconds and not be able to get it to release.
The next day, the cat was showing neurological symptoms. I transferred the kitty to a local ER vet where he was on a rabies hold for 10 days. They considered sending out for testing based on symptoms…for those that don’t know, the only way to test an animals for rabies is post-mortem (after death). So euthanasia would have been necessary.
It was advised to me by multiple rescue people, doctor and family to start the rabies series, just in case. Here’s the thing…you basically have 2 days tops to start the shots or it’s too late. So by the time a diagnosis would be confirmed either way, it would be too late to get started on the shots. I had never looked into rabies in humans before and how it affects you, but it’s fatal 100% of the time and an absolutely horrific death. Now the odds of the cat actually having rabies would be incredibly slim, but it does happen on rare occasions and you have essentially a 0% chance of making it if you don’t do the series of shots immediately after potential exposure. Between the 20 second latch on bite and neurological symptoms, I decided to go with the shots.
On day Zero, I got 5 injections… 1 rabies, 1 tetnus, and 3 rabies immune globulin (2 of those were in the finger at the bite site.) On Days 3, 7 & 14 I got addition rabies vaccines. Finally done with that! I have a couple underlying autoimmune conditions (Fibromyalgia, Sjogren Syndrome, small fiber neuropathy) an
Kitten Little is eating on her own now! 🥳 She is improving a little each day. 🔊Volume up for the cutest slurping noises. 😻
Taylor is doing great this morning. Snuggled up in her heated bed with her heartbeat kitten. After consistent cleaning and some Terramycin, her eyes already look so much better! She is eating good and finally had a big poop. She was very constipated, because who knows how long since she ate last.
She was hissing at me when I walked in the room and reached for her the first handful of times, because she couldn’t see with her eyes crusted shut. She just knew someone of something was coming for her. Now that they’re open and she knows I’m just trying to take care of her, I’m greeted with a big relaxed stretch and lots of purrs.
