Labradors and flat-coated retrievers could have a gene that causes hyperphagia

03/23/2024

Everyone who is thinking of getting dogs should read this because you need to understand this reality:

***I am a 21st century dog.***
-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

There has been a lot of information and misinformation circulating concerning the "Mystery Illness" in dogs. The bottom line is stay informed, take reasonable precautions (especially if traveling), know your dog, and as always if your pet is showing signs of illness consult your veterinarian.

“I don’t know that dog owners need to be any more alarmed than they are on the day-to-day basis if they’re practicing good social distance, being around known dogs that don’t have clinical illness … I think if we practice good judgment, I don’t think pet owners need to have any additional concerns.” Mariea Ross-Estrada, NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine

We dealt with the loss of not only a sweet client but a friend this week. She loved her fur babies and to honor Donna’s memory, the family has requested that donations be made to the Beaufort County Animal Shelter in her name at

Our goals are to create partnerships within the community in order to promote responsible pet ownership, decrease the overpopulation of domestic pets through spay/neuter programs, and to place adoptable animals in good homes.

DON’T FORCE ME TO BE SOCIAL!
Do we like everyone we meet? Do we all enjoy socialising and spending time with lots of different people? I certainly don’t and refer to myself as a “caninetrovert” – a person that much prefers to spend time with dogs rather than people. Maybe I’m a little different to the “norm”, but be that as it may, we are all individuals with different personality styles and social preferences.

Some of us are extroverts, gaining energy from interacting with people; some of us introverts, who find people draining and need alone time to recharge our social batteries and some of us are somewhere in between.

If we acknowledge that we are all different in this way, we also need to acknowledge and accept that our dogs are similar.

They could be overly affectionate or fiercely independent, approachable or nervous, energetic or laid back, confident or cautious, sociable, tolerant, selective or reactive.

We may be really disappointed when our dogs turn out not to be the socialite we expected them to be.

Some may even see this as a behaviour problem that needs to be “fixed”. Sometimes it can be improved, especially if the cause is from a negative experience, but genetics, breed tendencies, individual personalities, health and age all contribute to tolerance levels and sociability.

Accept your dog for who they are, allow them to choose whether they want to be sociable or not, respect their choices and never force an interaction that your dog is not comfortable with.

Urinary blockage, or urinary obstruction, is a very common disease that occurs mostly in male cats. This is a condition we see far to often and many male cat owners are unaware that their pet is at risk or what to look for.

It is a life-threatening emergency that must be seen immediately by a veterinarian.

Urinary blockages are caused mostly by the accumulation of minerals in the urinary tract, which can cause a formation of an obstruction by crystals or stones. If not treated, urinary blockages can be fatal.

If you notice any of these symptoms in your cat, they should be seen by a veterinarian immediately.

HOT CARS KILL: Please do not leave your child or pet in a vehicle. It only takes "a few minutes" for the air inside the car to reach harmful or deadly temperatures. "I was only gone a few minutes" is the #1 excuse given by drivers when we find animals and children in distress in hot vehicles. THANK YOU!!!

SIGNS LIKE THIS: For those of you calling and messaging about getting this sign, Dawn at Coastal Press 1706 Arendell St Morehead City NC (252) 726-1549 is the company that made them. $20 (It is a 2 sided sign such as to be used like a yard sign). She said that all proceeds will be donated back into animal services! Signs must be picked up from the shop or Police Department (No Shipping)

EXTRA BIG THANK YOU: Shout out to our A/C Officer Bill who had the sign idea and to his daughter, Emily, and Dawn at Coastal Press & Signs for the graphics and design!

It’s just a bite, how bad could it be? The little treats you are giving to your dog throughout the day really add up. Not only are high fat snacks like cheese and ham affecting their weight, but they can also contribute to life threatening pancreatitis. Dog calories are not equal to human calories, so check out this chart before you pay the cheese tax!
