How do you feed your pet? Do they eat out of a bowl? Or do you feed them out of a slow feeder or puzzle toy?

Cats and dogs loved to hunt and forage for food! It provides wonderful mental stimulation. To make it a little more “challenging”- soak your kibble in water or a little low sodium bone broth and freeze it! 🐾

Let’s talk chews!

Most dogs love to chew, and it gives us a little break sometimes! Dogs chew for fun, for stimulation, and to relieve anxiety. A few of our favorites are No Hide Chews, bully sticks, Benebones, Farm Hound Hide Rolls, and of course a stuffed Kong!! Always supervise your dog when they chew, and keep in mind that the edible chews have calories! If you’re giving one to your dog, just cut back a little on their next meal ☺️

As for what to avoid… real bones, antlers, and hooves are known to crack and break teeth. You want to be able to dent a chew with your fingernail.

How old do you think this dog is? She has some wearing on her teeth, but do you see any tartar or staining?

Did you know….

🦷By 2 years old, as many as 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some form of dental disease

🦷Untreated dental disease can result in other issues, such as heart, kidney, and liver conditions

🦷Animals often hide their pain and discomfort, and it’s not uncommon for animals to continue eating despite severe decay

🦷Daily tooth brushing is the best way to prevent dental disease, but sometimes treats, chews, and dental diets can be helpful as well

🦷Get into the habit of weekly mouth checks! Look for chipped or broken teeth, discoloration, redness on the gums, and tartar/staining.

Most people think socialization is meeting as many dogs and people as possible.

While having a friendly dog is good, having a NEUTRAL dog is what you really want. A dog that will ignore others out and about, but will happily go say hi if allowed.

Getting them used to being handled; walking and jumping on different surfaces and textures (exam table?! How many dogs hate jumping on it?) Create positive associations with these things! 🐾

Staff Pet Spotlight!

Technician Angela’s dog, Taika! Taika is a 2 year old Doberman Pinscher, who’s birthday happens to be today! Happy birthday Taika!

Doberman were originally bred in Germany to be guard dogs. They are smart, loyal, and protective of their home and people. The Doberman was used in World War II as watch dogs, as well as to deliver messages back and forth.

They require extensive training and socialization as young dogs. They’re high energy and would fit an avid runner or hikers lifestyle! Do your research before getting one to make sure they’re a good fit for your household.

⛈️Thunderstorm season is almost upon us!⛈️

If storms make your pets uneasy, we have some tips. Turning on the TV, playing music, or even using a fan can help drown out the noise.

Give your pet access to a safe spot- a crate if they’re comfortable in it, a cozy bed, or even hiding under your bed might make them feel safe. A common myth is that comforting them makes their fear worse, and it does not!! You cannot reinforce an emotion (fear) so snuggle away!

Distractions! Prep a lickmat, Kong, or puzzle toy ahead of time and stick it in the freezer. Fill it with something special and yummy!

If your pet still is anxious, ask us about medications that can help keep them calm. Give them well in advance of the storm so they are calm before it comes- they can sense the storm before we can.

How do your pets cope with storms?
