It's National Pet Day! Today we celebrate all the amazing pets that bring joy and love into our lives. Whether you have a dog, cat, bird, or something more exotic, take a moment to appreciate all the ways your pet makes your life better. ❤️🐾

*Pets provide unconditional love and companionship, helping to reduce feelings of loneliness and depression.
*They offer stress relief and can help lower blood pressure, making them great for our overall health and well-being.
*Taking care of a pet can provide a sense of purpose and responsibility, and can even teach children important life skills.
*Dogs and cats can help improve socialization, as they often provide opportunities to meet new people in the community.
*Having a pet can also encourage physical activity and outdoor time, whether it's going for walks with your dog or playing with your cat in the backyard.
*Finally, pets are just plain fun! They bring laughter, happiness, and countless smiles to our lives, reminding us to appreciate the little things and enjoy every moment.

Medications, alcohol, ma*****na and cigarettes/e-cigarettes are all dangerous to your pets!

Prescription medications and over the counter medications, including ibuprofen and cold medicine, all need to be kept closed in their original containers and up high out of reach of pets. Medications that are safe for us to use are not always going to be safe for our pets. They can cause many different side effects, even death. If you suspect your pet is in pain, having stomach issues or any other issues, please contact your veterinarian for an exam and a pet safe prescription before reaching for your own.

Ma*****na, alcohol, and cigarettes/e-cigarettes are all dangerous to pets as well. Like with medications, please keep all of these in containers and up high out of reach. If the substance you are using has waste, properly dispose of it; DO NOT leave it on the ground, or in your pet's reach. Curious pets can eat the butts and pieces, or drink remaining substances and still have reactions.

If you suspect your pet has gotten into or a hold of any medications or substances please call Pet Poison Helpline at 800-213-6680. Please be honest and transparent with what and how much they got into; this is vital for how to proceed with the next steps in care. Pet Poison Helpline will then direct you on the next steps to take, which may include contacting your veterinarian.

People foods can be tempting to give to our pets as a treat or snack. However, many foods that we are able to consume are not safe for our four legged friends! Here are 5 foods that are dangerous to pets and what damage they can cause:

1.) Xylitol is a commonly used sweetener in things like gum and toothpaste, that can lead to liver failure caused by increased insulin production and this increase in insulin can cause hypoglycemia.
2.) Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure. It is hypothesized that the Tartaric Acid in grapes is what causes kidney failure in dogs.
3.) Onions, garlic and chives can cause gastrointestinal irritation and can even lead to red blood cell damage an anemia. While this is predominantly in cats, dogs can be effected with a large enough intake of these foods.
4.) Coffee, as well as chocolate, contain substances called methylxanthines. These cause vomiting and diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death in pets when ingested.
5.) Yeast dough can continue to rise once ingested gasses can build in your pet's digestive system. This can lead to stomach bloating, then potentially twisting which then becomes a dire emergency.

Make sure to always research what foods are safe for your pet's before feeding them to your pet! In the event your pet ingests unsafe people food, call you veterinarian. Let them know what they ate, how long ago they ate it, and approximately how much they ate.

In warm conditions, snakes are more likely to be discovered searching for food, water and shelter. 🐍

Pets are more likely to be bitten around their own home as when encountering a snake, dogs and cats are likely to be curious or get defensive. 🐕‍🦺🐈

Out safety precautions include:
✔️Keep your backyard neat and tidy
✔️Clean up spilled food, fruit or bird seed
✔️Store firewood away from the house
✔️ Obedience train your dog
✔️ Walk your dog on a lead

P.S. don’t let your pets examine dead snakes as they still have venomous fans.

One of the most important things you can do to help your dog stay comfortable as they age is to schedule regular veterinary visits.

In general, senior pets should have a checkup every six months or so.

Dogs age faster than humans do. For example, a 12-year-old dog who gets a vet visit annually is comparable to a 75-year-old person who only sees their physician about every three years.
