Blind Dog Day recognizes the courage, adaptability, and resilience of blind dogs, and the special bond they share with their owners. Blind animals can be trained to localize and follow sounds such as clicks and whistles. In a household with more than one pet, a blind pet will often rely on another animal in the household to lead the way.
Do you have a blind dog? What helpful training tips can you share?

Leptospirosis is a dangerous, and potentially deadly, bacterial disease that can be harmful to both humans and animals.

Leptospirosis damages the kidneys and liver of dogs, humans and other animals, but is only rarely seen in cats. It is spread through the urine of infected dogs, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, opossums, rodents and other common wildlife.

Vaccination is the best way to prevent leptospirosis. Your dog can become infected by drinking, swimming in or walking through contaminated water or soil, or by consuming wildlife such as chipmunks, rats and mice.

If you ever notice unusual symptoms in your pet, we are here to help.

We are accepting new acupuncture clients with Dr. Crites!

Whether practiced as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) or evidence-based veterinary medicine, acupuncture involves the insertion of needles at various designated points to alter the body's biochemistry. Some of the actions of acupuncture include stimulating the release of the body's natural pain relievers, modulation of the immune system, and activation of natural mechanisms that promote a balanced, healthful state. Acupuncture has also been shown to relieve physical and emotional stress, increase circulation, provide anti inflammatory effects, and accelerate tissue healing.

Call us today at 907-892-9292 and book your consultation with Dr. Crites to see if acupuncture is a good option for your pet!

Get to know our team!

Kari is a Veterinary Assistant that was born and raised in California, spending her days between Fresno and Coalinga. She has loved animals ever since she can remember. Kari's maternal grandparents had a collection of well-versed birds and playful cats. Her paternal grandparents had a menagerie of animals, and as such, she also grew up around horses, cattle, llamas, emu, buffalo and her favorite animal, dogs.

Being of an adventurous spirit, Kari moved to Alaska the day after she graduated high school in 1996. While she moved back to California, just nine short months later, she had already fallen deeply in love with Alaska. Back in California, Kari was introduced to a brand new Veterinary Technician program at San Joaquin Valley College in Fresno where she graduated from the program in 1999 with an Associate of Science degree in Veterinary Technology. She was well on her way to fulfilling her dream of doing what she loved and calling it "work."

Longing to be back in Alaska, she returned in September of 2000 and has been here ever since. Kari spent the first few years of her veterinary career in emergency medicine, but soon discovered she had a passion for surgery. She spent eight years scrubbing in and running anesthesia at Veterinary Specialists of Alaska before she went to work for VCA Far Country Animal Hospital in October of 2001. She came to VCA Big Lake in July of 2024.

When she isn't at work, she loves spending time with her husband, Dan, and their four dogs, Ullr, Nugget, Snoopy Blue and Gunnar. In addition, in her free time she also enjoys painting, thrift store shopping, camping, playing board games and spending time with her friends, her "Alaskan family.

Aging cats are prone to a number of diseases, but the three most common are chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism.

These conditions can be difficult to distinguish clinically because all three tend to cause weight loss, increased thirst/urination and a generally unkempt appearance. Blood tests and urinalysis are often required to determine the cause of a cat’s illness and formulate an effective treatment plan.

Lots of summer cookouts end with cool, refreshing watermelon. Watermelon is fun for pets; the high water content hydrates them and the glucose gives them energy. However, pets often swallow the seeds or eat the rind, and both can block the GI tract. To avoid GI blockages, cut the melon from the rind and remove the seeds before sharing this classic summer treat.

One of the best parts about working at VCA Big Lake are the connections we make with our community. We truly enjoy being able to care for pets from young to senior age, and getting to know our clients as well as we know our patients.

Pictured here is Steve with Bexlee and Bjorn, two Labrador Retrievers that have been coming in since 9 weeks old, and are now 7 months old. It's become a tradition that they get their photo taken with Steve, and by owner request, Steve must be working when they come in. 😁

Veterinary medicine can be a heavy profession at times, and connections with our community like this truly brighten our day!

With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.

Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.

If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.
