Kitten alert! This cutie is looking for her forever home! Here is what her current caregiver says about her. "This young lady's pregnant mother was rescued from a feeding station. Born April 26, making her a Ta**us, into a gang of five kittens. She is a curious and playful creature has been handled from birth and is well accustomed to human contact. She greets me at the door, climbs onto my lap and as with any kitten is constantly moving. Mixed diet of dry and wet food and litter trained. Checked for both feline leukemia
and FIV with flea treatment started June 23. She will be missed!"
If you are interested in offering her a loving home, you can reach out to Bruce at 248-941-1566.

We recommend starting heartworm prevention on your cats on Tax day- April 15th, and continuing it monthly throughout the warm weather months! Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes. Have you ever had a mosquito get in your house? Indoor cats are vulnerable, too.
Heartworm disease is difficult to treat but very easy to prevent. Revolution Plus is a once monthly dose that is applied to the back of the neck. Please ask our staff for more information!

Happy first day of spring! As the Easter holiday approaches, please remember that Easter Lilies are toxic to cats! Any part of the plant can be deadly if ingested. Please keep lilies out of your home and spread the word to friends and neighbors of this seasonal danger! (Note: this photo was too cute to pass up, but that is *not* a lily this kitten is playing with!)

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Azia Haynes to the ECATS team!

Dr Haynes obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Ohio State University in May of 2022. There, she graduated top ten of her class and was awarded the American Association of Feline Practitioners Outstanding Senior award.

Dr Haynes knew that she wanted to focus on feline only medicine and surgery, so she moved from Columbus, Ohio to Michigan to begin her career at Exclusively Cats. Her goal is to one day become board certified in Feline Medicine and Surgery. Her special interests include internal medicine, cardiology, behavior, surgery, and client education.

In her free time, Dr Haynes enjoys hiking, traveling, and spending time with her three cats (Pablo, Tedwington, and Little Bear).

04/11/2022

In 2015, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center handled 763 cats exposed to a true lily, either Lilium or Hemerocallis sp. This does not take into account cats that were seen by a veterinarian who knew how to treat lily toxicity and did not need to call poison control. According to one study, 73% of owners whose cats were exposed to a lily didn't even realize the plant was toxic to their pets! In 2020, the highest spike of calls to the Pet Poison Helpline regarding lily exposure was on Mother’s Day, with Easter and Memorial Day being tied for second. One chain of emergency hospitals with over 100 practices in 29 US states reports an 85% increase in cases of feline lily toxicity in April and May each year, versus other months, with close to 1000 patients treated for lily toxicity since 2018. Only 4 of those cases have been canines.

As the weather warms and we bring spring flowers into our homes, we at Exclusively Cats Veterinary Hospital want to remind you that Easter Lilies are potentially deadly to cats. All parts of the plant are toxic, and fatal poisoning can occur following ingestion of just one leaf. Signs may include vomiting, loss of appetite and depression. Please avoid any type of lily in homes with cats. If you suspect your cat may have ingested any part of a lily plant, please seek immediate veterinary care.

We are very sad to report that Dr. Kaitlin Bahlmann will be leaving Exclusively Cats in the next few weeks. She is originally from Canada, and her boyfriend and family all live there, so she is returning home. We had hoped that we might convince her to stay, since she has been such an asset to the practice and a tremendously great person to work with. We know that this will come as a blow to many of our clients who have come to know and love her in the few years that she has been with us.

We are working to ensure that there will be no interruption in our available appointment times, so we are happy to report that Dr. Christine Fields will now be seeing patients Tuesday through Friday, adding two plus days to her schedule. Dr. Brooks' schedule will remain the same. We ask your patience with us as we adjust to having only two veterinarians for the first time in many years!

Please join us in wishing Dr. Bahlmann well in the future!

UPDATE February 4, 9:36am: We have been notified that these cats have all found potential homes, with a waiting list of potential backup homes. We will post an update when we know more. The two Tonkinese have an appointment with us next week for exams.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for the outpouring of support for this woman and her cats. There are a number of other cats on our page that are also looking for homes, if you are still looking for a new family member!

We have been made aware of a sad situation. An elderly woman who has 4 cats has been diagnosed with stage IV cancer and can no longer care for them. She lives alone and has no family, and may have to relinquish them to a shelter. Molly and Sophie are Tonkinese, Amelia is a Singapura, and Butterscotch is the calico (however, she may have a home). These cats are not our patients, so we do not have much information about them other than they were FeLV tested at some point in their lives, and were up to date on vaccines three years ago. We are receiving some conflicting information on the age of these cats - most of them are likely between 3-6 years of age, but one may be 11 years old. The two Tonkinese have some upper respiratory issues, that will be being looked into before adoption.

Please realize the information that we have shared here is the only information we have about these cats, as they are not currently our patients.

Even black cats can get lost in the snow! Because of and the rate of snowfall, Exclusively Cats Veterinary Hospital is planning on closing at 3pm today, so that our patients and our staff can return home safely. At this point, we do plan on being open for normal business hours tomorrow as we expect that the road crews should be able to keep the roads clear and salted by that time. Any labs sent to our reference laboratory today may be delayed, due to the storm.

In case of an emergency during the storm, please contact the Emergency and Critical Care department at Oakland Veterinary Referral Services at (248) 334-6877. Stay safe!

We are very excited about this announcement about a new treatment for feline arthritis! This treatment has just been approved, and is not available just yet, but we will be excited to offer it as an option, once it is available. Monoclonal antibody treatments have rare and mild, if any, side effects, and are currently being used in dogs and analyzed in cats for treatment of skin allergies.

LOOKING FOR A HOME!
Grey Cat and Kitten are two 7-year-old spayed females whose owner has been moved to memory care due to Alzheimer's. Grey Cat has all her claws, and Kitten is front declawed. Kitten is on long term medications for a chronic eye issue. Both cats are about 10 lbs in weight and very sweet and cooperative at the veterinary hospital. They were last seen for wellness visits in September 2020. Both cats are in need of dental care to deal with some painful cavities but are otherwise very healthy. Currently, they are living alone at the home, and an elderly friend of hers is going over daily to care for them and spend time with them. He has scheduled them for their routine wellness exams and plans to address their dental issues. If you are interested in providing a forever home to these ladies, please contact the owner's friend by email at [email protected]

Three little kittens lost their...
Five-month old Hiccup, Scout and Ninja came in to visit us from their foster home, today, to be neutered, vaccinated and microchipped in preparation for finding forever homes! They are sweet little boys who are a little bit shy, but should warm up in a loving home. They have been tested for Feline leukemia and intestinal parasites and have been dewormed as well. Today's vaccines are their final kitten vaccines, so they should be ready to find their new homes very soon! Please comment if you are interested in learning more.
