Good morning everyone, we would like to introduce our new Veterinarian and Dr. Frankie's newest partner, Dr. Caswell !

Dr. Caswell grew up on a small farm in rural Sonoma County. By the time she started kindergarten, she knew she wanted to be a veterinarian to help take care of animals.

Dr. Caswell began her professional career working in the dairy and livestock industry of our Central Valley. Her early passion for 4H & FFA project animals continues and she looks forward to becoming more involved locally with these programs and people.

Before joining her new family - Waterford Pet Hospital - she worked for a local Emergency Hospital at night while taking “day shifts” at many small animal hospitals searching for the best place to call “home”.

In her free time, Dr. Caswell enjoys baking cookies and desserts, visiting with her family, and finding new animals to add to her crew. She currently has a 15 year old rescue chihuahua, a 3-legged dachshund, and a toothless cat. She is excited to better know the community and to build long lasting relationships with her patients and clients.

We are very excited to introduce her to our community. Rest assured she has Dr. Frankie's full confidence in her ability to continue Waterford Pet Hospital's tradition of compassionate, professional medicine for all our pet families.

Cats do not have sugar receptors in their taste buds, making them one of the few animals in the world that can’t taste sugar (and they shouldn’t have it anyway!). Learn more about how to feed a cat at https://bit.ly/2CO739Y.

Howdy Y'all, My name is Elias and I recently graduated from Fresno state in December 2022 with a bachelors degree in Animal Science and an emphasis of livestock management with a Minor is Spanish . Shortly after graduating I had the amazing opportunity to move to Waterford and work directly under Dr. Frankie, who continuously guides me in the right direction to further my own career in becoming an astounding veterinarian much like herself. Im currently a cat dad of two mischievous yet purrr-ty felines M.J. ( longhaired grey and white) and Haze ( Shorthaired cream tabby) who keep me on my toes.

Hello, my name is Randie Young and I recently joined the wonderful team at Waterford Pet Hospital as an assistant to Dr. Frankie. I was born and raised in Turlock, and now Denair is home. I married my first love and high school sweetheart, Frank, 37 years ago. We have been blessed with two sons and seven amazing grandchildren. My main responsibility, prior to coming to Waterford Vet, has been raising children and caring for my family. I previously worked in the veterinary field for 7 years, with the pleasure of being trained by, and to work for, Dr. Doug Marks, in Turlock.
As far as pets, I currently have 1 cat, named Tom, so the house does feel empty at times. At one point we had 3 German Shepherds, 3 cats, and four of our seven grandchildren living with us. I must confess, I miss the chaos. I’ve posted a picture of Tom as well as a few pics of the four legged family members that are no longer with us, but still have a home in my heart.
I look forward to meeting you and your fur babies, if I haven’t already. I love helping families strive for and maintain healthy and happy lives.

Fireworks, picnics and other Fourth of July traditions can be great fun for people; but all of the festivities can be frightening and even dangerous for animals. Noisy fireworks and other celebrations can startle animals and cause them to run away; holiday foods can be unhealthy; summer heat and travel can be dangerous; and potentially dangerous debris can end up lying on the ground where pets can eat or play with it.

Whether or not you're planning your own Independence Day celebration, it's important to take precautions to keep your pets safe both during and after Fourth of July festivities.

Safety during July 4 celebrations:

- Leave your pets at home when you go to parties, fireworks displays, parades and other gatherings. Loud fireworks, unfamiliar places and crowds can all be very frightening to pets, and there's great risk of pets becoming spooked and running away.
- Consider putting your pets in a safe, escape-proof room or crate during parties and fireworks.
- Keep horses and livestock in safely fenced areas and as far from the excitement and noise as possible.
- Keep your pets inside if you or your neighbors are setting off fireworks.
- Keep sparklers, glow sticks, fireworks, charcoal and kabob skewers away from curious pets.
- Don't let pets get near your barbecue grill while it is in use or still hot.
- Avoid the urge to feed your pets table scraps or other foods intended for people.
- Remember that too much sun and heat (and humidity!) can be dangerous to pets. Keep them inside when it's extremely hot/humid; make sure they have access to shady spots and plenty of fresh water when outdoors; don't leave them outside for extended periods in hot weather; and know the signs that a pet may be overheating.
- NEVER leave your pet in your car when it's warm outside. Vehicle interiors heat up much faster than the air around them, and even a short time in a locked car can be dangerous to pets.
- If you're traveling out of town for the holiday, consider leaving your pets at home with a pet sitter or boarding them in a kennel. If you need to bring them with you, be sure you know how to keep them safe.

With wild fire season upon us, it's important to remember as irritating as smoke can be to people, it can cause health problems for animals as well. Smoke from wildfires and other large blazes affects pets, horses, livestock and wildlife. If you can see or feel the effects of smoke yourself, you also should take precautions to keep your animals – both pets and livestock – safe.

Animals with cardiovascular or respiratory disease are especially at risk from smoke and should be closely watched during all periods of poor air quality. Look for the following signs of possible smoke or dust irritation in animals.

- Coughing or gagging
- Difficulty breathing, including open mouth breathing and increased noise when breathing
- Eye irritation and excessive watering
- Inflammation of throat or mouth
- Nasal discharge
- Asthma-like symptoms
- Increased breathing rate
- Fatigue or weakness
- Disorientation or stumbling
- Reduced appetite and/or thirst

If any of your pets are experiencing any of these signs, please give us a call @ (209) 874-4482 to talk to a team member about scheduling an examination.

Is your pet feeling itchy? Have you noticed them scratching more than usual? The warmer months of spring and summer are prime time for seasonal allergies for people AND pets. It's common to see dogs scratching more than usual this time of year. While this is often attributed to an allergy, your veterinarian can determine the specific cause and recommend a treatment plan to help relieve your itchy pet. Give us a call to schedule an exam!
