The first summer we owned the farm, the mayfly population was so horrendous that a vet actually said something to one of my boarders about it. But we had a plan! Now that we use automatic waterers in the field, and only have small buckets of water in the stalls, the mayfly population is negligible.

1. Turn Off Lights: Switch off lights over water troughs at night to avoid attracting mayflies.

2. Scoop Dead Mayflies: Regularly clean out dead mayflies from water sources to keep them fresh and safe.

3. Check Your Hay: Inspect hay for any surface contamination to ensure it's clean and healthy.

4. Cover Water Sources: Use covers or nets over water troughs to prevent mayflies from getting in.

5. Stable Management: Keep stables clean and reduce standing water around the area to limit mayfly breeding grounds.

It's important to remember that while you can vaccinate for Potomac horse fever it does not guarantee a horse will not get Potomac horse fever and it takes about 3-4 weeks after the second dose to take full effect. When the cold snap hits with 20 mph winds, so you gotta bust out the Farm Girl Nunchucks on them fresh ponies.

Would your horse: • Calmly ride around while there is tractor work happening right outside the arena? • Hang out happily munching hay right beside the tractor in their pasture?

After a solid month of patience, persistence, and consistency, I finally have the mares returning their feed buckets to me in exchange for a cookie. The geldings only took three days. 😅

This is the most boring video you’ll watch today. So why are we posting it? - Horses were stalled overnight for the first time in months - Our feed room is an open room smack in the middle of our barn Skip to the end to see our horses calmly standing in their stalls waiting for breakfast. Boring can be good!

We completed our last and largest track yesterday! Words cannot describe how peaceful and serene it was this morning watching the sun rise.

Q: When we say horses on a track system tend to be calmer, what does that actually mean? A: Horses better able to cope with unexpected or novel stimuli.
