The smell of smoke, the sight of flames, the sound of sirens, and the weight of hundreds of lives depending on us... Today was truly a scary experience.

A grass fire that broke out this afternoon came alarmingly close to the CBHS campus. With over 300 animals residing at the shelter, we knew we would not be able to move them all out at a moment's notice. But with high winds driving the fire closer than we felt comfortable with, we decided to temporarily evacuate the animals as a precautionary safety measure.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to our dedicated staff, Board of Directors, volunteers, and community members for all showing up and helping us to evacuate hundreds of shelter pets to ensure their safety. This would not have been possible without the unwavering support of each individual involved.

We also want to thank all the firefighters who worked so hard to contain the fire. They are the reason property, people, and animals are safe, and we are very appreciative!

We are relieved to report that thanks to our wonderful firefighters, the fire has been extinguished, and all the animals are safe and have been returned to the shelter. It has been truly amazing to see our community come together in such a short time, and we cannot express our gratitude enough!

Meet Luke and Tucker! These two charming and sweet pups came to CBHS as strays. While they are both intelligent and playful, it quickly became clear that they could greatly benefit from structured training to learn basic commands, manners, and improve their responsiveness to their handlers.

🐾 Luke is a cheerful 5-month-old boy. He is an eager pup who will do almost anything for a treat, but he can be a bit unruly and mouthy, so he would benefit from some structure and obedience training.

🐾 Tucker, on the other hand, is a 3-year-old with a lively and spontaneous spirit. He has been at CBHS since January, and has not had anyone meet with him for adoption. Tucker is very smart and willing to learn, but he would thrive with more structured training to help him become a well-mannered member of the canine community.

Both Luke and Tucker have a wonderful opportunity to gain a new leash on life through the Second Chances training program in partnership with Rock River Pet Resort. We feel that if these pups are able to receive a good training foundation, it would undoubtedly help them find a forever home.

Guess that Breed! Who remembers Kanga, one of CBHS’s long-term residents, who was recently adopted?🐶

Thanks to a generous donation of a couple DNA kits, we are thrilled to announce that Kanga was one of the lucky pups chosen for this special opportunity. She is now living her best life in her forever home, but her results are in!😄🐾

HELP US SUPPORT OUR NEW SECOND CHANCES TRAINEES❕

We have two more pups joining the Second Chances training program in collaboration with Rock River, but we need your help to get them there!

However, since that's not possible, we'd have to settle with a German shepherd/pit mix blended into an adorable ball of energetic chompies. Luke is an eager pup who will do almost anything for a treat, but he can be a bit unruly and mouthy, so he would greatly benefit from some structure and obedience training.

🐶 Tucker, on the other hand, is a 3-year-old Australian Shepherd mix with a lively and spontaneous spirit. He already knows basic commands like sit, but he would thrive with more structured training to help him become a well-mannered member of the canine community.

Both Luke and Tucker have a wonderful opportunity to gain a new leash on life through this training program, and they truly deserve the chance to become the best pups they can be. With this additional training, their futures look even brighter.

Now, here's where we need your help! The cost for one dog at the Second Chances training program is $600.
