Our Story

Chestnutpark Welara Ponies is a very small scale breeding and training operation producing high quality, spirited, versatile large ponies suitable for intermediate children or adults. (Welara being a cross of the Arabian and the Welsh Pony.) After nearly 30 years in the Arabian horse industry, I am now retired and stay at home to raise and care for my ponies. They are trained and handled with love, patience and a lifetime of experience. Their training is low-pressure and long-term, with logical progression from one step to the next along with the necessary conditioning for the job required of them. Physical and mental soundness are preserved and protected throughout the training process by giving the pony the physical and educational preparation to do what will be asked of him. Mating decisions are made very carefully; with consideration to disposition, conformation, and athletic ability of both parents being of utmost importance. I have known or trained horses as far back as four generations in the pedigree of my star broodmare, Prima Silverstar, who is a *Muscat granddaughter. The Welsh stallion that I chose as her mate is *Wedderlie Mardi Gras LOM/AOE/OD, owned by Family Partners Welsh Ponies of Riddle, Oregon. He not only has a very extensive and varied record of accomplishment himself, but has produced countless offspring who are following in his hoofsteps. The get of this match are proving to be all that was expected and more.
