History

This is an original May 30, 1973 photo of jockey Ron Turcotte chatting with his agent Joe Schiavone. According to the back of the photo, Ron Turcotte would shortly ride Secretariat in the Belmont Stakes and would attempt to win the Triple Crown and become the eighth jockey to do so as Eddie Arcaro rode two Triple Crown winners in Whirlaway in 1941 and Citation in 1948.

Happiest of birthdays to Ron Turcotte, legendary Hall of Fame jockey, winner of the 1972 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes aboard Riva Ridge, winner of the 1973 Triple Crown aboard Secretariat, French-Canadian sports hero, advocate for injured riders and persons with disabilities...and a man who simply loves horses.

This was a special moment between Turcotte and Riva Ridge at Churchill Downs the morning after the 1972 Kentucky Derby. Riva’s wire-to-wire effort had just given both Turcotte and the Meadow Stable their first victory in the Run for the Roses, and the grateful jockey is quietly peeling an apple for the lovable champion.
