Thoughts from your local responsible "retail bird breeder"...
You might have noticed that we didn't have babies available nor did we promote live pets over the holiday season leading up to Christmas like many other "breeders", pet stores, and even some "rescues" did. We have heard theories as to why that was. Like "they can't sell anything anyways", "nothing available", "because they are ignorant and missing out on great sales. Their loss!"
The truth of the matter is this, we aren't in this business for the money, fame, or respect. We are in this business for the love and well being of parrots. Which includes limited, responsible, and selective production of high quality pets with committed, educated, loving homes already lined up prior to installing nesting materials.
Now in about 4-12 weeks, the pet industry is going to be seeing a ton of the "We need to re-home our pet" posts. These are the folks who purchased/adopted animals as Christmas gifts who are now suddenly allergic, moving, having a baby, don't have time, their kids won't take care of it, didn't think they'd get so big, too loud, too messy, too expensive, (etc...). It's time for you (the gift buyer), as an adult, to make better choices and be the responsible pet owner that you think you are and expect your children to become. Animals are not toys. They are not disposable. They are a long term commitment. When you buy/adopt them, you are agreeing to be their caretaker until death do you part. It is just as serious of a commitment as getting married.
Going into 2025, shelters are FULL... rescues are FULL... And it has very little to do with ethical breeders. If you are one the 3% or less, who actually has a legitimate reason for not being able to keep this life long commitment and you absolutely MUST re-home the animal, please keep it at home and care for it until space at a no kill rescue or shelter becomes available or you have found a suitable home.
Without ethical breeders, 80% of the pets available now would be extinct. Without shelter's and rescues you have massive levels of animal dumping, abuse, neglect, abandonment, and death.
Let's start addressing the root cause of the current animal crisis - irresponsible animal ownership, breeding mills, animal brokers aka animal flippers, and organizations that promote pets as anything other than a long term commitment. We all have to work together to help the animals we love and cherish so dearly.
Thank you, PPP.
