This cold rain gets to all of us, imagine how it it is for dogs? Their world is so small then add being stuck inside and not being able to play outside or go for walks. They get bored and anxious which can lead to not so good behavior. Here are some tips to help tire your doggo out.
In the meantime, we will manage and hopefully Mother Nature permits more walks and outdoor time. What a great time stop in and see the beautiful dogs available for adoption at Jefferson County Dog Control! 🐾❤️

This handsome chunky boy is available for adoption. Nova is a 4 year old pitbull/bull terrier mix. He is good with kids, cats and other dogs. He does need eye surgery and the cost will be covered by us. We are open tomorrow 2-6 if you would like to come meet this big hunka love! ❤️

There are a lot of good enrichment ideas in the picture below. Please remember a tired dog is a good dog!

If you are cold, they are cold! PLEASE be mindful of how long pets are being left outside in the snow and below freezing temperatures. Like humans, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia.

A reminder to Syracuse residents:
Adrian's law punishes pet owners if they leave an animal tethered outside in extreme temperatures (above 90 degrees or below 32 degrees fahrenheit) for a period greater than 2 continuous hours.

If anyone suspects animal neglect or abuse, please call 911 immediately. You can also call the Syracuse Police dog control number at (315) 442-5346 or our Animal Cruelty line at (315) 442-5336.

Some great tips for your pets for Thanksgiving! Remember it can be overwhelming when your pets have a change in routine and lots of different people around them. Give them a space to decompress if they need to. Make sure they can't get into foods or decorations that could harm them. We all wish you a happy Thanksgiving!

I'm Cardi. My daughter and I are feeling a little lonely. Sometimes we forget we had a family; it was such a long time ago. My people friends here at NCPAS say someone's coming for us: "Just wait" they say. We've been good girls and waiting. Maybe you just forgot you were coming for us?

As the leaves change and the temperature dips with the progression of fall, the likelihood of your pups interacting with deer ticks increases significantly. Deer ticks love this time of year, so here are some tips to keep you, your dogs and other household pets safe this autumn.

1. Use veterinary-approved tick preventives on your dog (more info below).

2. Avoid wooded areas and tall grass.

3. Check your pets and yourself after going outside. Ticks can be transmitted to indoor cats, so make sure to do a thorough search.

4. Do not handle ticks with your bare hands. Ticks transmit numerous diseases to dogs and people, including:

*Borreliosis (Lyme Disease)
*Anaplasmosis
*Babesiosis
*Ehrlichiosis

5. Contact your vet or doctor with questions.

Regarding Jefferson County Dog Control

🔔 IMPORTANT: SOUND ON! 🔔

This is a walkthrough of Dog control a couple days ago. We want to communicate several really important things with this video. Please read and watch.

1. The shelter is COMPLETELY full. Please adopt, adopt, adopt.

2. If you’ve lost a dog, please come in to see if your dog is there. The shelter needs people to reclaim their pets. (Also note that the current supervisor won’t allow stray intakes to be posted on Facebook, which is actually illegal.)

3. Please turn the sound on for this video. This is the loudest shelter that we have ever been in. Staff and visitors cannot walk back in the dog run area without wearing hearing protection. When the new NYS Ag & Market that go into effect in 2025, it will be a violation of the law to have decibel levels this loud. The county should be addressing this right now.

4. We have been advocating for volunteer help for the last four years to Jefferson County. The dogs at the shelter are getting almost no exercise and socialization because there are so many dogs that the staff can hardly keep up with cleaning alone.

5. When dogs don’t get exercise, socialization, enough enrichment, and *time away* from these extremely stressful conditions they rapidly deteriorate. You may notice in the video that some of the dogs are circling in their kennels. This is called stereotypic behavior and essentially means the dogs are breaking down and going crazy. Not getting the dogs out for exercise, socialization, and giving them ample enrichment will be illegal when the new laws come into effect in mid-2025. The county should not wait until then, this needs to be addressed now.

6. Please continue to advocate for these dogs in our community. The most effective thing you can do is go to the monthly General Services Meeting and speak to the legislators and the county administrator in person. So many of you have complained that writing letters and making phone calls has gotten you nowhere. Please go in person! We will post the General Services meeting schedule in the comments.

7. We understand that the shelter assessment that was done in early May of this year stated that Dog Control should be utilizing volunteers. We also know that the county attorney has been unwilling to allow volunteers. Remember: Tompkins and Livingston County shelters utilize volunteer help. Jefferson County has the same liability and insurance coverage as those counties. There is no reason why the Jefferson County should be prohibiting volunteer help at the shelter especially now when it is so desperately needed.

Can you help us feed the dogs? Right now Chewy has an offer where if you buy $100 worth of food, you'll get a $30 gift card! We use Blue Buffalo and it's at the top of our Chewy wish list. We'll put a link to the wish list in the comments.
Thank you for helping us care for these beautiful dogs.

Starlett wants to remind everyone that today is National Pitbull Awareness Day!

She may be a Pitbull mix but she is the best house-hippo ever! Housetrained, good with kids, dogs, cats; loves to play! Stop by and meet this sweet girl. The shelter is open from 8am-12pm.

There are only 5 days left to month.

For the month of October Fuccillo Subaru of Watertown has partnered with Jefferson County Dog Control to help dogs find loving homes by donating $100 for every dog adopted.

If you have the opportunity, stop in to say hello. There are currently 26 dogs searching for a place to call home.

10/25/2023

Hello!
There are a few specialty items that members of our Veterinary Team would appreciate having donated!
- Heavy Duty Slip Leads
We use slip leads every day for our dogs. Daily use causes a lot of wear and tear, so we are looking for durable upgrades!
- Dog Pill Pockets
We use Pill Pockets to give animals much needed medications. We are not picky with what flavor we use!
- Size: Large Pop-Up Dog Kennel
We use these in our veterinary wing for safely housing dogs that are temporarily on site.
Thank you in advance for your support! We couldn't do what we do, without you!
