Calling all K9 Learning Center friends and family. On June 22nd (Saturday), we are having a volunteer help out day. After being in business over 13 years, our jumps need to be repainted, divider gates and other equipment needs a bit of repair plus we are planning to paint and then add a decorative collage to the big wall in the entry section of the space. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The K9LC will provide lunch and drinks. We will start at 9 am but folks can come anytime. Please contact Nan at 269-341-3105 if you can make it. We would like to get a head count for lunch. Let's crank up the radio, accomplish things, and maybe joke around and have a silly good time. 😁😁😁😁😁😁

Christmas Canines
Many families choose to add a puppy or rescue dog to their homes at Christmas. A pet can bring joy to a family for many years. Holidays are often hectic and it is important to prepare for the new arrival before they come. Puppies know nothing. They have no manners and are probably not housebroken, may never have been told to stay off the furniture, not to chew shoes or children’s toys. They are curious, adventurous, and do not know the rules you have in mind for them. Rescue or shelter dogs may come with already learned bad habits and need to learn what is expected of them in this new environment. It may take several days or even weeks before you discover the behaviors that landed them in the shelter. These behaviors may be hard to change. During the holidays there may be many distractions in the household. Preparation is essential. A plan should be in place for where the dog will sleep, eat, where he can stay in the house and how to ask to go out to go potty. Everyone in the family should know the plan so the dog gets the same message from everyone. Everyone needs to know what the method of discipline is and how to apply it. Children need to know how to play with the puppy or dog so they don’t hurt each other. There is excellent help available to make the transition smooth for both the family and the canine. In Watervliet, Nan Edwards’ K9 learning Center has been in business for 13 years and offers classes for all levels and especially for new holiday pets. K9 Learning Center instructors are experienced, knowledgeable, and want to help you succeed. Classwork and individual attention will lay the ground work for your pet to be well behaved in your home in and in the community. The skills earned are the basis for earning the nationally recognized title of Canine Good Citizen offered to all dogs by the American Kennel Club. Classes begin the week of January 2. Cost for the 6 class series is $125. Classes fill quickly. Call Nan at 269-341-3105 to sign up.

Thank you Diana Dick for this article. Diana is available for in home individual consultations. She can be reached through LaKabin Kennels at 269-674-8728.

DOG TRAVOIS. Travois were hauled by dogs before horses started appearing on the Northern Plains by the late 1600s. Horses, named “elk dogs” or “big dogs” by some tribes, could carry more weight, thus allowing larger tipis for nomadic tribes. Horses also revolutionized hunting and warfare techniques.

The elderly woman, perhaps a Lakota Sioux named Red Thunder, reportedly held the staff of her husband, Little Bull, and posed in her best regalia. A finely-crafted miniature buffalo was on the dog’s back. (PC users click click image to better see detail.) What appeared to be a dead skunk was in the travois. Dating from about 1910-20 or so, the photo by Frank Fiske of Fort Yates (ND) was found at the Buffalo Bill Museum.
