Today we had to say goodbye to a wonderful coworker, puppy mom and best friend Eowyn. Every day she lined up happily to go to work and absolutely loved it. We loved her so much. Give your pets an extra hug today for us. ❤️

Scientists recommend limiting your dog’s pool time and using a water filter to remove chlorination byproducts based on new study findings.

Bladder cancer has been linked to environmental chemical exposures in people, but these risk factors are not well understood in dogs. By examining several factors, researchers identified an increased risk of bladder cancer for dogs exposed to pool water and high concentrations of chlorination byproducts from their municipal water source.

Learn more about this study, which was co-authored by the Principal Investigator for our Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, Dr. Julia Labadie:

As some of you already know, Eowyn has been unwell over the last 17 days. Due to the incompetence and callousness of UGA Veterinary Hospital, we were not able to get a diagnostic abdominal ultrasound until today. Unfortunately, the results could not be worse. We can confirm masses on both kidneys, liver, and in the bladder. The vet believed her impaired gait and stumbling is a result of masses in her central nervous system. Although we could do more testing, there is no way to treat cancer that has become systemic to this degree. The mass in her bladder is so large that it will be blocking her ability to urinate in the near future and euthanasia was recommended when that occurs. A highly optimistic timeline is three months. That's highly optimistic. For the immediate future, we're looking into a symptom management strategy with her primary vet and taking it one day at a time. Today she had a turkey sub with me for lunch and in the pictures below we went to the doggie bakery, had a steak taco and finished it up with an ice cream cone.
