Roxie is an 8 year old Boxer who was brought in for being painful, unable to walk, not eating, and vomiting following a recent front leg amputation at her regular veterinarian’s office. The front leg amputation was due to osteosarcoma.

Upon arrival, Roxie was laterally recumbent and painful. We placed an IV catheter, administered a loading dose of pain medication, ran bloodwork, took radiographs, and hospitalized her. During her stay, Roxie received 2 different types of IV fluids, a plasma transfusion, a pain medication CRI (constant rate infusion), several GI medications, and an antibiotic. Our staff placed a urinary catheter to monitor her urine output, and to allow her time to rest without having to walk. We also closely monitored her vitals and bloodwork.

Roxie did very well for us! We slowly weaned her off of her pain medication CRI, were able to get her eating, and switched her to oral medications. After 2 days of hospitalization, Roxie was able to be discharged, and she has been doing well at home! 🤎🐾

⭐️ Answer to yesterday’s post!

While the gas pattern above the foreign body resembled something like a nerf dart, finger, or a toy that an adult may have (😅🤣), the object was actually a corn cob 🌽! Check the comments to see it outlined on the radiograph! We’ll also include a photo (in black and white for those with weak stomachs) of the corn cob once it was removed!

Ares is a 1 year old Cane Corso who was seen for vomiting. We performed a GI workup, which included bloodwork and radiographs. There were some minor changes on his bloodwork, and his radiographs revealed a corn cob! He was hospitalized to receive IV fluids, GI medications, an antibiotic, and pain medications. He also had surgery performed to remove the corn cob. His post-operative care included continued monitoring of his vitals and bloodwork, as well as continued IV fluids and medications.

Ares is doing great! 🩶🐾

Can you spot the foreign body? Any guesses on what it was? 🤔Hint: the zoomed in version is in the comments! 😉

UPDATE: This dog is now in the care of Mommy & Me rescue.

‼️Female dog found on Route 45 between Vicksburg and Lewisburg. If you know her or her owners, please contact us at 570-399-0403‼️

She was hit by a car, has 2 broken back legs, and requires extensive treatment beyond our hospital’s capabilities. We are treating her shock and managing her pain for the weekend. We plan to help as much as we can. The good samaritan that found her has graciously donated towards her care, but for obvious reasons, is not able to take on such a large financial burden that she will require at another hospital. We are accepting donations for her care, and any donations beyond that point will go towards her additional required care elsewhere.

If you would like to make a donation, you can contact us at 570-399-0403, or send a donation through Venmo .

Bleu is an adorable Boxer puppy who was brought in when his neuter incision dehisced.

After Bleu was sedated, his incision was scrubbed and flushed. Then, our veterinarian freshened the edges of the incision, and placed sutures to close it. Once he was fully awake, Bleu was discharged with an antibiotic. His calming medication and pain medication dosages were also increased.

Bleu did great and his incision healed well! 🤎🐾

Did you know that Animal Emergency Center has Snyder ICU oxygen cages? These advanced cages not only provide oxygen therapy, but also heat support and cooling. Unlike traditional oxygen cages, these cages have precise controls in which we are able to set specific oxygen levels, temperature, and humidity. Once the parameters are set, these cages will maintain at those levels.

There are numerous cases where these cages are beneficial. Some of those cases include: head trauma, heat stroke, asthma, pneumonia, anemia, and congestive heart failure.

Here is one of our patients helping us show the Snyder ICU oxygen cage. He benefited from this cage when he was experiencing increased respiratory effort. 🩶

Phoebe is a 6 month old Boxer who was seen for a possible broken leg after playing with her housemate.

On arrival, Phoebe was given an injection to help manage her pain. Afterwards, our staff performed radiographs, which showed that she had a radial/ulnar fracture. Her leg was placed in a splint, and she was prescribed medication to help with pain and inflammation.

Phoebe recently was able to get her splint taken off, and has healed nicely! 🤍🐾

Check out her radiographs in the comments below! ⬇️

Keisha is an 8 year old Boxer who was brought in for purulent vaginal discharge, increased thirst, increased urination, decreased appetite, and vomiting.

Diagnostics revealed that Keisha had a pyometra, which is an infected uterus. Her bloodwork also showed that she had a low protein level and was anemic. Keisha was hospitalized to receive 2 types of IV fluids, pain medication, GI medications, and antibiotics. She was also taken to surgery to remove her infected uterus.

After surgery, Keisha continued to receive her IV fluids and medications. We also frequently checked her vitals and monitored her bloodwork. Unfortunately, Keisha’s protein level continued to drop, and she developed edema on her extremities, neck, and around her incision.

Keisha then required a plasma transfusion, which was administered over a few hours. During her transfusion, we closely monitored her vitals. After her transfusion was complete, there was significant improvement in her edema, and her bloodwork was improving!

We’re happy to report that Keisha’s bloodwork continued to improve, and she was doing well enough to be discharged with medications the next day! She recently came in to have her staples removed from the pyometra surgery, and is completely back to her happy self!

Enjoy some photos of Keisha during her hospitalization, after her plasma transfusion, getting love from the staff, and back to being a happy wiggle butt! 🩷🐾

Jax is an 11 month old feline who was brought in for vomiting and inappetence.

Exam findings showed that Jax was dehydrated and had a painful abdomen. After we performed bloodwork and radiographs, Jax was hospitalized to receive IV fluids, pain medication, several GI medications, and an appetite stimulant.

After 24 hours of hospitalization, Jax was no longer painful, was eating, and did not have any vomiting, so he was able to go home with oral medications. He has been doing great! 😺🤍

Piper is a 10 year old Golden Retriever who was bit on the muzzle by an eastern copperhead.

On exam, there were 2 puncture wounds and a moderate amount of swelling noted on Piper’s muzzle. After we administered pain medication, we checked a full blood panel, as well as a blood smear and clotting times. We also clipped and cleaned the bite wounds.

Piper was hospitalized to receive Antivenin, IV fluids, and pain medication. We also monitored her swelling, vitals, and bloodwork. Piper did great, and was discharged with pain medication the next day! The first 2 photos are when she first arrived to our hospital, the 3rd is during her stay, and the last photo is her back to normal and living her best life! 💛🐾

Did you know that Animal Emergency Center has Rattler Antivenom? This is a product that is used to treat bites from copperheads, rattlesnakes, and cottonmouths. Rattler Antivenin is the first and only licensed antivenin for treating envenomation for canines and felines. It is the only scientific way to neutralize venom and treat the patient's symptoms. 🐍

Boo is a 2 year old Golden Retriever who was brought in for a hot spot on his neck. On exam, the skin on his neck was moist, red, inflamed, and painful. It was also noted that both of his ears were red and inflamed.

Our staff performed a skin cytology and ear cytology by collecting samples of both and examining them under the microscope. The ear cytology showed yeast and bacteria. The skin cytology also showed bacteria. After we shaved the fur around the hot spot on his neck, we cleaned the area and applied a powder that is an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and anesthetic. We also cleaned his ears and applied a medication that helps treat yeast and bacteria. Boo was prescribed these medications to go home with, as well as an ear cleaner.

Hot spots are red, inflamed skin lesions that appear quickly, ooze, and can contain purulent discharge. Most hot spots are caused by an underlying condition that either causes itchiness, excessive licking, or excessive moisture.

As you can see from his smile, Boo was very happy to make some new friends at the emergency vet! 🙂💛🐾

- Agitation or discomfort
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Disorientation
- Seizures

Has your pet ever experienced an allergic reaction?

“Hi, I’m Lambert and I’m here to check in.”

Lambert is an 8 month old Boxer who was seen for lethargy, vomiting, and watery stool.

Upon arrival, Lambert had a temperature of 104.6. His bloodwork showed an elevated white blood cell count, and his radiographs showed gas, but had no evidence of a mass, foreign body, or obstruction.

Lambert was treated with several GI medications for his vomiting and watery stool, as well as an antibiotic and pain medication. He is doing excellent! 🤎🐾

He was pretty eager to learn about our check-in process, so we’re thinking about hiring him pawt-time! 🤣

Roscoe is a 4 year old Boxer who was brought to our hospital for inappetence and lethargy. He also has a history of getting into things!

Roscoe’s exam showed that he was dehydrated. His bloodwork was mostly unremarkable, but his radiographs showed a round object in his small intestine. He was hospitalized to receive IV fluids, pain medication, and several GI medications. The plan was once Roscoe was rehydrated, he would be taken into surgery to remove the object.

After a few hours of being on IV fluids and receiving medications, Roscoe began having diarrhea. However, we found the round object previously seen on radiographs in his bowel movement! Thankfully, Roscoe was able to pass the object, which ended up being a baby spoon handle, and avoided surgery! He remained hospitalized to help correct his dehydration and treat his GI symptoms.

Roscoe is home now and doing great! 🤎🐾

When you can take a relaxing nap because you’re feeling so much better! 🥰

Olive is an 11 year old Chihuahua who had a decreased appetite and thirst.

Olive’s bloodwork showed an elevated white blood cell count, meaning that she had an infection. Her radiographs showed an enlarged, fluid filled uterus. With these results, our veterinarian diagnosed Olive with a pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus. This is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention. The treatment is to surgically remove the infected uterus.

Olive was hospitalized for IV fluids, antibiotics, pain medication, and GI medications. She was also taken to surgery to remove her infected uterus. Olive’s surgery and post-operative care went well! She was able to be discharged with medications the next day, and has been doing great at home! 🤎🐾

Our Story

When it comes to an emergency situation, you need to know your pet has a place to go for advanced medical care. At the Animal Emergency Center in Watsontown, we're here when your regular veterinarian can’t be. Our emergency animal hospital is open during nights, weekends, and holidays to care for pets who need unexpected urgent care.

Our animal hospital is the result of a collaboration of 10 different veterinary clinics in the area who came together to address the problem of not having emergency care available to the community. And so, our animal hospital was born. Established in 1999, we filled the gap of emergency care by providing urgent care services after hours and on weekends and holidays.

While we started off small, we are now a full-fledged, AAHA-Accredited animal hospital built specifically for emergency cases. No matter what your pet’s emergency, whether they have suffered trauma, are experiencing an allergic reaction, have ingested a foreign object, or any other situation, we have the tools and the expertise to get them back to full health. We will treat every patient like the individual they are since no two pets and no two conditions are exactly the same.

We understand that your pets are family members. Our dedicated staff consists of a team of receptionists, certified veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and veterinarians who all work together to offer compassionate and superior care to our clients and their pets.
