Kelly is a 3 year old Dachshund who presented for difficulty giving birth.

While we were able to assist Kelly with giving birth to 2 puppies, she was unable to deliver the last one. She was taken to surgery to remove the final puppy, and was also spayed! She remained hospitalized after surgery to continue receiving IV fluids, pain management, and an antibiotic.

🌡️ The inside of a vehicle can quickly reach deadly temperatures, even while parked in the shade or with the windows cracked.

🐾 Trust us - if your pets can’t join you inside, they would be much happier staying cool and comfy at home than face the dangers of heatstroke. A quick errand is never worth the risk to their life.

Cody is a 5 year old Pug Mix who presented for vomiting and having a bloody bowel movement.

After performing diagnostics, Cody was hospitalized for treatment of AHDS (acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome). He received IV fluids, a combination of GI medications, an antibiotic, and pain management.

We’re happy to report that Cody is on the mend and doing well! His owner sent us this adorable photo of him at his grooming appointment! 🖤🐾

👉 AHDS, previously known as HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis), is characterized by bloody diarrhea and typically vomiting. There can be several possible contributing factors to AHDS, such as intestinal bacteria, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxins, or immune-mediated disease. AHDS can result in severe, life-threatening dehydration, so it is crucial to seek immediate veterinary care if your pet is experiencing symptoms.

Huck is a 2 year old Boxer who presented after being bit on his ear by another dog.

After we checked Huck’s bloodwork, he was sedated to have his laceration clipped, cleaned, and closed with sutures. Afterwards, an e-collar was placed on Huck to prevent him from scratching the ear and sutures. He was also prescribed pain medication, an anti-inflammatory, and an antibiotic.

Huck has been doing fantastic, like nothing ever happened! 🤎🐾

Otto is a 2 year old German Shorthaired Pointer who presented in lateral recumbency, unresponsive, and hypersalivating. Otto’s owner noticed that he was disoriented at home, followed by seizure activity.

We immediately placed an IV catheter and ran bloodwork, which showed a low glucose and elevated liver values. Given Otto’s symptoms and bloodwork, we were suspicious for xylitol toxicity. After some discussion, Otto’s owner found an empty container of sugar-free gum that was previously almost full.

We began administering dextrose, and Otto started to become more alert! Once he was fully alert, we induced vomiting, which contained several pieces of gum. Otto remained hospitalized in order for us to continue closely monitoring his glucose. He also received IV fluids supplemented with dextrose, liver support, and GI medications.

Otto is doing well! 🤎🐾

Many brands of sugar-free gum contain xylitol as a sweetener. This ingredient is highly toxic to dogs. If your pet has ingested sugar-free gum or anything containing xylitol, contact Animal Emergency Center at 570-399-0403 or your regular veterinarian immediately.

Double trouble! 😯

Leo, an 11 year old Pug Mix, and Ranger, a 4 year old Pitbull, chewed a bottle of Apoquel and ingested 143 tablets.

While Leo was asymptomatic, Ranger had an elevated heart rate, ocular changes, and was lethargic. After obtaining baseline bloodwork, Leo and Ranger were both hospitalized for close monitoring of their vitals and bloodwork. They also received IV fluids, GI medications, and activated charcoal. Ranger required additional treatment, including artificial tears, and medication to help lower her heart rate.

After about 36 hours of hospitalization, Leo and Ranger were both doing well and able to be discharged with medications. It was also recommended for them to have follow-up bloodwork performed. 🤎🤍🐾

Our Story

When it comes to an emergency situation, you need to know your pet has a place to go for advanced medical care. At the Animal Emergency Center in Watsontown, we're here when your regular veterinarian can’t be. Our emergency animal hospital is open during nights, weekends, and holidays to care for pets who need unexpected urgent care.

Our animal hospital is the result of a collaboration of 10 different veterinary clinics in the area who came together to address the problem of not having emergency care available to the community. And so, our animal hospital was born. Established in 1999, we filled the gap of emergency care by providing urgent care services after hours and on weekends and holidays.

While we started off small, we are now a full-fledged, AAHA-Accredited animal hospital built specifically for emergency cases. No matter what your pet’s emergency, whether they have suffered trauma, are experiencing an allergic reaction, have ingested a foreign object, or any other situation, we have the tools and the expertise to get them back to full health. We will treat every patient like the individual they are since no two pets and no two conditions are exactly the same.

We understand that your pets are family members. Our dedicated staff consists of a team of receptionists, certified veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and veterinarians who all work together to offer compassionate and superior care to our clients and their pets.
