Here's the ol girl who lost her foal a few days back, her names Wyo Miss Blue Bar, bred by my old friend Dan Dudden in Colorado. Kept her in a corral for a few days to make sure she's ok. She's by Blue Apache Hancock out of Plenty Bar 097 by Plenty Dividend, bloodlines to die for. She's a classic Apache daughter, gotta be pushing 1500 pounds. I don't blame her a bit for the loss of the foal, just a cluster of bad stuff all at the same time led to tragedy, it happens. In spite of the badmouthing she got from "those who are no longer with us," she'll be out with a stud in a few weeks, and she'll die here on the ranch.

Just blocked a bunch of jackass wanna be horse experts.... Been the best part of the day! Latest one wanted an autopsy of the premature foal we lost a few days ago.... Citing a genetic disease that can cause mares to prematurely abort stating if both parents carry the malady, I should never breed them again. Did some research and found that it's mainly afflicting warmbloods. Been one documented thoroughbred and zero quarter horses. The logic was that if it's in thoroughbreds it can be in quarter horses....... So one thoroughbred, no quarter horses, darlin I'll take my chances. AQHA has worked hard to identify genetic diseases in quarter horses and I try hard to keep up with all that, but this one hasn't made the AQHA list and never will. I've got more pressing real world things like new foals everyday and breeding season almost here to deal with a wanna be nurse urging me to check into a wanna be threat that has one chance in 50 million of having any relevance. But I wasted an hour this afternoon, as I just got in from the dark doing the real work of taking care of horses. Going back to my policy of the last few years, don't get sucked in to idiocy, never respond, no good ever comes of it. Been doing this long enough I know the profile and can see'em coming a mile away...... To those of you with pages that have significant traffic, watch out for the ones that have pages with NO traffic as no one pays them any attention so they go looking for it. Lifes too short for this chit and it will wear you out! To all of you reading, congratulations, yer still here!

So this ones been coming on for a bit... Winters over, and Spring is coming on, we all have hopes and dreams for the coming season but.... But, at the same time, like clockwork, every damn year, the various forms of horsetrolls emerge from the cold, slimy rocks where they've wintered, ready to slander those who have the courage to try, to do...... Starts with the nearly innocent comments like "her backs too long..." usually from the prepubescent... Then comes the condescending morally superior "Perhaps having mares you can handle better is what you should be breeding" followed by the intellectually challenged but vicious "what kind of hell hole is this place for horses? Tiny areas on a hill.." and "this animal is a terrible mother and should have never have been bred. But it's COLOR. Color. Color. and money is all people care about...Can't get a halter on her, kept in tiny pens.. DISGUSTING..." All this in just the last day, woke up to all thaaaat! I responded, almost respectfully to each one, well not overly respectfully but in a form I wish you all could have enjoyed, but alas, when confronted with facts and logic every ol sow deleted her comments immediately along with mine, and some very clever (and appreciated) ones from all of you. In the distant past I responded (toyed) with all of these but more recently I've just not wasted my time and blocked... Done, over. But this spring I'm wondering, do they really merit an immaculate termination? Or should I repost the idiocy that I saved along with names of pathetic passive aggressive morally challenged ankle biters?

I've promised all of you, years ago, to share the good, the bad, and the ugly of horse breeding in the great American West. The challenges, the successes, and the inevitable failures. Never claimed perfection, after more than three decades I still get surprises I never saw coming. Guess I could retreat to the only unicorns and butterflies version the world loves but I don't think that's why all of you are here. And neither am I....

Got some good news on my knee situation, but I got some troubling news too... Got an appointment for the needed MRI for Friday, good! But the nice lady at Mid Valley Hospital in Omak said I can't show up wearing any pants with metal in them, like rivets, zippers. She said "men don't like to take their pants off" which was news to me but she might be right at the doctors office. Kinda set me back and I asked "what the hell other kind of pants are there?" She kindly, patiently suggested sweats or leotards...... Now folks, I can't say I really dress up much to go to Omak, but I've damned sure never gone to town in some slinky outfit like that! I'm cautiously looking for suggestions... mebbe a kilt with no belt? Course Lucka and Margaret are FULL of suggestions that aren't helping my view of Friday much.... Whatever comes down, there ain't going to be any photographs!

To wrap up last nights story, I hope... We were able to get her in the panels, get a rope on and eventually a halter. At this point, with the foal lost our only aim was to get the mare gentled down a bit and in the corral so we could closely monitor her and treat if she's retained any afterbirth or had an infection. She was about what I'd expect from a range mare who had been halter broke likely at weaning and then spent her life out on range (60,000 acres) raising foals. Good ones. She's a big girl, close to 1500 pounds, and used to getting her way and I get that, respect it. She'd come a few inches, and back an inch but Deven did a really nice job of being patient but firm and she was starting to remember her manners by the end. She's in the corral, no temperature and a bright eye and I think she's gonna be fine. Note the beautiful April on Bodie weather progression ha!

As always, the good, the bad, and....

Been a rough 48 hours on the PLR. Already told the story two nights ago about the mare stealing a new foal and the three ring circus that entailed, but with a happy ending. But that's not always the case. Last night, the mare that poached the foal, Wyo Miss Blue Bar had some afterbirth dangling but still looked pretty pregnant at close to midnight. We made the rounds checking for a foal, nothing there. She was real agitated, running around and charging the other horses, kinda dangerous situation. Tried to get a halter on but she's spent most of her life as a range mare in Wyoming and she wasn't interested.... We finally gave up around 2:00 AM before something or someone got hurt. Back out at daylight and more of the same. She's gotta be pushing 1500 pounds and I'm just not moving well enough to have a chance with her. We were worried the foal was backwards and at this point you just hope to save the mare. Fortunately our friend Deven Idler was able to come up and give a hand. Decided to put up some panels around the feed bunks in hopes of getting a hand on her in an enclosed space. We were just getting started when Lucka and Deven headed up the hill fast. I could see the mare, but couldn't see that she was giving birth. They got there just as it came out. They got the bag off quick but it was dead, likely since last night. It came ears first nose back with front legs back and was a slow hard birth. It's a little premature, hair starting to come in on the head but clearly not ready for this world. Not certain of the cause for premature foaling but guessing that the stress from the previous night, stealing a foal, who did nurse from her, getting separated from the foal and birth mother and a lot of running around was just too much for her. It was a hard thing to see but I'm grateful the foal wasn't backwards with all that entails and the risk to the mother. It was a beautiful blue roan stud c**t with a star..... Folks, this story is only about half over but I can't keep my eyes open and barring another crazy night, I'll wrap it up tomorrow. Count yer blessings cuz you just never know...

Got yer attention ha?! Anyone have any source for a bulk price on horse dewormer? I was going to treat them with Ivermec this time around but the prices have risen and I can't seem to find any of the bulk sources I used to use.... Having a hard time getting excited about buying 200 doses by the individual tube......

Note! Photo from the internet for attention, not from my horses!

Well I knew the late nights were coming..... Red Roan Cake foaled at sundown and everything was perfect, foal up and sucking and looking good. Luckily Lucka checked again at midnight and another mare had stolen the foal and she was close enough to foaling she had milk and it was nursing... Great start to Easter. Red Roan Cake would approach her foal but Miss Blue Bar would shoulder her away, alway keeping the foal on the other side. There's no corral up there and ya just start wondering how the hell is this one gonna work out??? You could run the blue mare off but the mother would go with her like glue thinking she was hiding the baby. Got a little western for a bit cuz while you could run her off, she was coming back at a gallop and 1400 pounds coming in hard into the flashlight and me one legged was kind of a thrill.... Lucka got a rope on the foal and we took her outside the gate and waited for the mares to settle down, and hope we could get the right mare through the gate and to the foal without getting extra mares and repeating the cluster. Course it's a wire gate and me having limited mobility didn't help the odds. Lucka led the foal back in and got the mothers attention enough to follow her through the gate as I headed off the blue freight train with a well placed pop of the whip and I was able to beat her to the gate. Soon as the mare got to her foal she nuzzled it, as it started nursing and all was well. Lucka led the foal down to the corrals with the mare trailing and we were able to pen them alone, plus, the foals pretty close to halterbroke. The moon was high and the owls hooting as we stood by the corrals and my knee was sniveling a bit, but you feel so thankful to get through one of those without any injuries and everyone settled in for the night...
