Happy Fantastic Staff Friday! Let's get to know our Veterinary Technician Assistant Supervisor Kaitlyn!

What experience do you have with horses? I started riding very young and made my debut into the equine world in leadline 4-H. My poor parents had two horse crazy daughters so we shared a horse for a year or so, but quickly found another horse. Most of our horses were either given to us or very inexpensive and came with quirks, so I learned at a young age how to train the basics and build a good partnership. Before graduating high school, I found a paint yearling that I was able to train from the ground up and watch grow into the amazing horse I own today, Remy. I attended the University of Findlay where I had a horse heavy curriculum, including a year of western riding courses, and continued my education outside of school getting my equine massage and rehabilitation certificate.

If you've ever ridden, what discipline did you ride? Both while in 4-H and when I would compete in open shows, I enjoyed speed events; I loved barrel racing and pole bending. I now find the ground a little harder than when I was younger, so I now enjoy slowing down on trail rides and ride ranch pleasure on Remy. We still take a spin around the barrels, but I enjoy just being in the saddle these days.

How long have you been at Chicago Equine? I have been at Chicago Equine for about 2.5 years!

What led you to Chicago Equine? I moved to Illinois a few years ago and had wanted to get back into veterinary medicine as I had worked in small animal for a while. I was a new graduate with a bachelor’s in Animal Science and found the job posting involving horses and veterinary medicine and I never looked back.

How do you spend your time outside of work? I spend my free time on our hobby farm with my husband and animals. Most days I can be found working with my GSP Moose, spending time with my horse Remy, or watching our two alpacas romp in the pasture. I also enjoy photography as a hobby, especially when it involves animals or nature.

Do you have any hidden talents? I am one of the resident western horse whisperers. I enjoy getting to work with the stock type horses at appointments.

Happy Fantastic Staff Friday! Let's get to know our Veterinary Support Specialist Megan!

What experience do you have with horses? I have been around horses since I was born! My grandparents owned Mary-Dee Farm in Wisconsin where they bred Arabians/Half-Arabians and my mom, Juli, owns Fox Hollow Farm in Wisconsin. She is now enjoying her well-deserved retirement from training, but still travels for lessons and judges in the US and internationally, so I still get to be “in the loop” with all of my equine family! I am truly blessed to have grown up with such beautiful, intelligent, and sensitive animals!

If you've ever ridden, what discipline did you ride? I have ridden/competed at local, regional, and national shows in many disciplines: Mostly Hunter and Halter, but rode Western as a child. There was also a short, questionable stint in saddleseat/Arabian Native Costume…but I try to focus on the better moments in my life…

How long have you been at Chicago Equine? Since January of this year!

What led you to Chicago Equine? I have always loved working with animals. After many years in small animal/pet care education and management, I decided to move to an industry I love on a more personal level: Horses!

How do you spend your time outside of work? The majority of my time is spent “sporting” and trying new food places with my significant other Nick, and being the personal butler to 3 cats (Apollo, Moon & Midnight), an Eclectus Parrot (Link), an AmStaff (Bruce), and a bearded dragon (Myles).

Do you have any hidden talents? My clumsiness is pretty epic and really could be considered a talent…
