🎄🐾 Holiday Plant Hazards 🐾🎄

Festive favorites like mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias can cause digestive upset—or worse—if curious pets take a bite! 🐶🐱 Keep them out of reach to keep your holidays happy.

🌲 Bonus Tip: The water under your Christmas tree might seem tempting to pets, but it could contain harmful fertilizers or bacteria. Cover it up to avoid any risks!

As you know, roads can start getting icy this time of year. A common de-icing product known as rock salt is a mixture of sodium chloride that helps reduce ice build-up on roads. ❄️

What you may not know is that rock salt can be extremely dangerous to pets - especially when ingested or licked from paws and fur. Symptoms of salt poisoning include drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.

If you suspect your pet may have ingested rock salt, contact us right away! You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

🎄🐾 Kitty Corner: Holiday Safety Tips just for Cats 🐾🎄

The holidays can be exciting, but they can also be overwhelming for our feline friends. Keep your cat happy and safe with these tips:

✨ Stress & Quiet Spaces: Give your kitty a quiet room or cozy hiding spot stocked with favorite toys, blankets, and easy access to food and water.
🚗 Traveling Cats: Secure your cat in a well-ventilated carrier during trips, and try using a calming pheromone spray to ease travel stress.
🐕 Unfamiliar Pets & Visitors: Your cat may not love meeting Aunt Mary’s dog. Create a “safe zone” and use gates to keep introductions low-stress.

Help your cat enjoy the holidays as much as you do! 💕

The risk of hypothermia becomes higher during cold weather. Exposure to cold water or cold air are the most common causes of hypothermia, so it's important to keep pets warm and dry. Protect your furry friends this winter! If you think your pet may be at risk of hypothermia, get them to a veterinarian immediately and take action steps below:

🥶 Remove them from the cold
🥶 Wrap them in warm coats or blankets
🥶 Use your body warmth to increase their body temperature
🥶 If they lose consciousness and are breathing, put them in the recovery position (Read about the recovery position here: https://firstaidforpets.net/recovery-position-and-why-could-it-save-your-dogs-life/)
🥶 If you know pet CPR, respond quickly if they stop breathing

A Note from Roxas's Family,

"Roxas unfortunately was diagnosed with Diabetes by WVRC ER back in April of 2023. Through some basic management things were going great till May of 2024 over labor day weekend when he became very lethargic, stopped eating, and all around just not doing great. With noticing these symptoms we ended up bringing him back into the ER and were informed that his diabetes progressed into a DKA status.

The Emergency team took action right away, and after being hospitalized for 3 days he finally bounced back to being his perky sassy self. Since then we have had the pleasure of getting even more in-depth direction and understanding with his Diabetes through Dr. Balog's team with Internal Medicine.

Roxas has been doing SO MUCH BETTER and back to having zoomies and driving his two sisters crazy. We are so grateful for the entire staff at WVRC, from the front desk being fast to answer the phone in an emergency to the attentive nature of the medical staff has been out of this world. Roxas and myself are incredibly lucky to have WVRC on our side to keep him feeling like himself. Thank you to everyone for your continued hard work ❤️"

Holiday Food Safety for Pets 🐾

The holidays are full of delicious meals and treats, but not everything on your table is safe for your furry friends. Here’s what to watch out for:

🍖 Turkey & Roast Trimmings
Bones and fatty leftovers can lead to dangerous blockages or pancreatitis. Keep bones, drippings, and greasy foil safely out of reach.

🧅 Stuffing & Gravy
Onions, garlic, and certain herbs are toxic for pets and can cause severe health issues.

🍫 Candy & Chocolate
Sugar-free candies with xylitol and rich chocolates (like truffles) are highly toxic—especially to dogs. Avoid giving any human treats to pets.

🍷 Alcohol
Even a small sip can cause toxicity. Be mindful of unattended festive drinks!

🛑 When in doubt, keep human food away from pets and stick to pet-friendly treats. A little caution can prevent a holiday trip to the vet!

Patient Spotlight: Larby McDermott 🌟

Larby, a brave feline, came to us in critical condition with dangerously high kidney values and severe electrolyte imbalances. With a history of bilateral SUB (subcutaneous ureteral bypass) placement, his case was complex and required specialized care.

💙 Over his week-long hospital stay, Larby amazed us all with his resilience! His tailored treatment plan included:
✔️ Daily labwork
✔️ A central line
✔️ Nasogastric feeding tube
✔️ Urinary catheter
✔️ SUB flushes
✔️ IV antibiotics & GI medications

By the time he went home, Larby’s kidney values were near his baseline, and he was on the road to recovery. We're so proud of this determined kitty and the care team who supported him every step of the way! 🐾

Let’s give Larby a round of a-paws for his courage! 🐱💪

Cats are remarkable athletes! 🐈 Their superiority in speed, precision, and flexibility are only matched by their extraordinary ability to sleep 12 to 16 hours a day. When they aren't sleeping, these little speed gymnasts can sometimes accidentally get into potentially hazardous situations. One instance could be their collars catching on protruding objects, trapping or injuring them. Cats may also try to escape their collar and catch their leg or their lower jaw in the collar, making it hard for them to move. If anything like this happens to a cat without anyone around, it can be extremely dangerous for them.

Breakaway collars are a great solution that can help keep your cat safe. Some people think collars are not necessary for cats that don't go outside or that they won't tolerate them. But cats can get out accidentally so for their safety, inside or outside, we recommend getting them used to wearing one. Breakaway collars save cat lives! ❤😸
